Yeah, just went out to the desert and had to drive a really muddy canyon. Slippery mud, not thick deep mud. in 4Hi with VSC OFF it is full open diff all times, in 4Hi with VSC ON (did not press VCS button) as soon as I hit about 2,500 RPM I get full engine regulation. So in my onion in any 4x4 situation where you need to stay throttled, you either get 1 front, 1 rear or engine regulation.. Hope I explained that well.

Same pretty much applies in 2WD. With auto LSD on (VSC button pressed not held down) anything over 2,500 rpm is open diff, anything over 30MPH is engine regulation. However on a side note, the auto LSD works extremely well in very slow rocky situations.. I made it up some very sketchy hills in just 2WD with just a little momentum..

I will review video footage to see if it is worth uploading to see where the engine regulation comes in play.

To be clear, when you say VSC OFF (and not TRAC OFF), you held in the button, while stopped, for 3+ seconds first?

VSC is always on unless you do that... So, I am thinking you are really speaking of TRAC?

    In H4:
No button touching= TRAC (limited slip with regulation)
Quick press of button= TRAC OFF (limited slip without regulation)
Stop and hold in button 3+ seconds= VSC OFF (no slip control or stability control)

In H2, TRAC OFF is called AUTO LSD. (VSC is off to 30 mph)

In L4, you only have VSC OFF (open differentials, no slip control) unless you are an OFF ROAD TRD.

Ok.. let me try to caveman this to see if I have it correct. REFERRING TO A TRD AUTO SPORT

Start truck.. drive in H2 as normal.. engine and brakes regulate to stop me from dying / slipping

Start truck.. drive in H2 and press button once quickly... brakes regulate to stop me from dying / slipping but the engine just works normal (after 30mph it goes back to normal as if I didn't press the button)

Start truck... drive in H4 ... brakes and engine are trying to save my life /stop me from slipping if need be...

Start truck... drive in H4 and press button once quickly... brakes are still my friend (no death / slip) but the engine is not regulated

Start truck... drive in L4 ... there are no options with Auto sport... no brake or engine control (just like a 70s open diff 4x4)

Start truck... press and hold button for 3 sec and all brake and engine controls are off unless you do something stupid then Toyota deems you an idiot and turns shit back on.

If this is all correct great... if not please tell me what I missed without using any of the stupid lsd or trac terms :)

Also, is there anything that is regulated by 2500rpm as indicated in one post?

One error, at 30 mph the VSC OFF mode choice does not go back on... Only if the truck senses a dangerous condition, at ANY speed.

Only in AUTO LSD is VSC turned off to 30 mph.

I read post #84, it said for Sport, I have the off road and some where I read the OR has more or does post #84 apply to ORs too! I know I'm not an idiot, I like to think I have special needs!

At no point did I ever hold down the VSC Button. Always just a single press.

Only thing I noted different is
    In H4:
No button touching - TRAC with engine regulation
Single press button - full open diff no regulation or LSD. (TRAC OFF- light on dash)
Note I pressed this button while moving when my passenger told me to stop letting off the gas.. so I quickly pressed the button and it let me hold my rev at about 3,000 rpm

    H2:
Auto LSD - only works at low RPM otherwise open diff up to 30 mph before engine begins to regulate.

Of course, it is possible Toyota changed things and that is why I appreciate any and all reports on what we experience with our truck's special or hidden 'secrets'.

The single press can be done moving or stopped. In H2 it changes TRAC to AUTO LSD. In H4 it changes TRAC to TRAC OFF. Both AUTO LSD and TRAC OFF are the SAME function, which is limited slip with the brakes and not engine cut off. TRAC has the engine cut off or 'output regulation' as Toyota calls it.

AUTO LSD also combines with the VSC OFF light, but only until you reach 30 mph, when the light goes off. This is the only period when you have traction control but no stability control. The 2012 + Tacomas have a selectable TRAC OFF in H4 (2009-2011 in H4 are normally in TRAC OFF mode, but no button push or light).

What is unclear, but I have been told, 2012+ in H4 with TRAC OFF mode turned on, the VSC OFF light is not on, or to 30 mph, as it is in H2 with AUTO LSD.

The differentials are always open unless you have a locker. I do think you mean that to indicate no traction control (which Toyota calls VSC OFF) which happens only if you STOP moving, press and HOLD IN the VSC button for at least 3 seconds until VSC light comes on.

Again, TRAC OFF (quick push in H4) should give you the most limited slip if any tire is in mud or ice and spins, by braking it (them), but not cutting engine power.

You are correct there is a bit more if you have an OR.. all of post 84 applies to you however you have more things happening in 4lo depending if you have an auto or manual.

I have the auto, I have always had a 4x4 with locking rear/front diff. This truck is too techy for me. I will probally never use the crawl function, I'll just use 4 H/Lo + driving skill/experience and forget about all the other button pushing!

I have an AUTOMATIC transmission. The traction controls are the same. 3rd Gen manuals do not have the new MTS or CRAWL, however... but I am not including those, but are just advanced systems of A-TRAC.

Correct, VCS OFF light is not on.

Yes, by open diff I mean no braking to create the "Limited slip effect"

I was just up in the snow. Yes with everything off you can slide the truck, but you have fully open differential "no electronic limited slip" helping send power to both rear tires. Just 1 tire gets power, so if you tried this on dry pavement, no go.

But again, if you spin those rear tires up over 30 mph, you will get full engine regulation and braking regardless if everything is turned off.

Also to note, stock everything up in Big Bear after this recent storm, no chains.. Tacoma is a f***ing champion. Made almost everywhere in 2Hi with just the auto LSD on, Manual shifted in 2nd gear kept the rpms low and I was able to keep it moving everywhere. Had to drop it in 4 a couple times while parking because I was afraid to get too big of a run at a parking spot lol.

On your truck, in H2, with AUTO LSD on, the VSC OFF light IS on to 30 mph, then goes off? That what it does on mine.
