A new bolt here, a new bolt there, a new bolt everywhere.
Oil change, tire rotation, bled the brakes, toped off fluids, and "dealer style" detailed the the truck.

Stop. Just stop with this whole "owners manual" logic.

OP: just read up on forums, spin around 3 times and throw a dart at a number chart. Whatever number you hit, that's the interval.

    You're welcome.

or do like me.... one dealership near me does the oil change every 10K for free. The other dealership a few more miles away does it every 5K for free .... they both call me and remind me to get the oil changed. The 5K dealership actually makes me an appointment a head of time and texts and calls to remind me.... problem solved.

Not this shit again. Information in the OP is/was good, but it's outdated. Check the warranty card that came with the truck, the 2TR-FE has since been approved by engineering to have 10k interval.

http://www.toyota.com/owners/faqs Then under synthetic oil there's an interval question that spells it out.

I have been trying to figure out whether or not synthetic (vs regular) oil is "required" for my new 2017 SR5. The manual calls for 0-20w, but I do not see a specific mention of synthetic (which is required for my 2016 Outback). I am thinking it is optional, but not sure - any idea?

My understanding (although I have no knowledge as to 'why') is that once a vehicle has had synthetic oil in it, you don't want to go back to regular oil. Also, I'm not sure you can get 'regular' 0W-20, thought that only came in synthetic.

EDIT - Looked into it a bit. Couple oil vendors say that it's fine to mix (as in, you're not actively going to hurt anything in the short term, if you're in a pinch), but that it could hurt the oil's performance in the long term. I figure I'll just stick with synthetic, and 0W-20.

I just went through this unpleasantness with my dealer yesterday, for the second time.

    My truck is a 2015 2TR-FE.

ToyotaCare is 2 years of scheduled service at no cost. The 2015 maintenance guide specifies 5,000 miles or 6 month oil change intervals. This is found on schedule B, page 54, of the manual downloadable from Toyota.

I have had to argue about the 6 month service interval twice now. The first time, in spite of what my 'maintenance guide' says the service manager had to call Toyota. The second time, I rather threw a tantrum. They changed the oil, charged Toyota, and were quite pleased to see me to the door.

This confusion results from poor communication by Toyota to their customers and dealers. It is most unacceptable.

A few minutes on the Toyota website will reveal that starting with the 2016 model year, the 2TR-FE is now approved a 10k mile 1 year interval. The FAQ page remains unchanged (18 months now) and the owners of previous models years have NOT received any service bulletins changing their OCI from Toyota.

The bad fact is that for warranty claims on the 5 year powertrain warranty, the maintenance guide will certainly be controlling. Have an engine failure at 4 years with a 2015 vehicle and not be able to document the required oil changes and see how that works out for you. It will not matter who said what or when. Your improperly done ToyotaCare records would in fact hang you.

Toyota should hang their head in shame on this one. Instead, they send ads for ToyotaCare+ where I can pay $299 for two more years of arguing with the dealer service department about what the OCI is.

    Phoey.

Its easy, when the maintenance light goes off, I will put off changing the oil for many more 1000s of miles. By the time I get to it, its around 10,000.
