Advice on changing transmission fluid

Im going to change my transmission fluid and transfer case fluid tomorow and was just wondering if theres anything i should know before i do. Any tips would be appreciated. My tacoma is a 2002 trd sr5 V6 5 spd. I dont know if the transmission or transfer fluid has ever been changed so i figured i should do it. Gonna put in some Royal Purple

75w-90 in both. Does it matter if its synthetic or not. I was told that 75w-90 only comes in synthetic so.

 

I just did this a couple weeks ago myself. Get one of those screw-on pumps, it makes getting the oil into the transfer case and transmission a lot easier. I've read good and bad about using synthetic, some people have said it worked great and others said it made the shifting bad. I'd say use it and if you like it keep it.

75w-90,the guy at napa told me that 75w-90 only came in synthetic. Not just royal purple but 75w-90 in general. I dont know if the napa guy is right.

 

Make sure you buy enough T-IV tranny fluid...I bought 3 qts as per Toyota service guy's instructions (he told me 2.5 qts would do it), drained the fluid, and needed 1 more quart. In other words, buy 4 quarts (hell, buy 5; that way you don't have to ride to the Toyota Parts Department on your bicycle midway through servicing your truck).

You can always keep the leftover quart(s), or return them.

Oops...auto tranny experience here...not applicable (or maybe it is). Just buy enough fluid.

 

Not a big deal as long as you stay with synthetic.

They had a whole thing on Horsepower tv or another and they net like 15 hp just from going to royal purple rear diff and tranny oil from a camaro.

 

I think the T-IV fluid is only for automatic trannys isnt it. Yah shit that would suck to be short a whole quart.

 

i heard its also better to go with the GL-4 stuff rather then GL-5. GL-5 stuff can be hard on the syncros. I think i remember reading that somewhere.

So gear oil goes into your tranny instead of tranny fluid?

 

the front diff takes the same as the tranny and transfer case but with the rear diff i put 80w90. It says right on the bottle of RP "great for manual transmissions".
