I got back from work today and found my tailgate down and it appears to have been hit. It's very annoying since there's no note or anything. My insurance is covering but I still have to pay the deductable.

I have the tailgate clamp mod and it ripped it right off so the impact was prob harder than it looks. The backup cam doesn't work anymore either...ugh.

Any cameras in viewing distance of your truck? Any color transfer?

Unfortunately no cameras. I got color transfer and even managed to find a vehicle with a dent and red color stripe. The cops told me that unless there are witnesses, they can't use it as evidence. They wouldn't even take pics of the truck that hit mine. Since when was it bad to have more information?

However, it was a government truck and I managed to track down the driver. He's going to be paying for my $200 deductible. I'm still pissed though since the accident report will always be on my truck's record and my insurance will probably go up.

I got pretty discouraged after the police told me they can't make the connection between the dent and my tailgate. So legally, I can't pin it on him. We are both AF officers so we would have to go through a long military process if we choose to pursue that course.

I'm just taking what I can get I suppose without having to go through an annoying process.

The cops should be charging the driver with hit and run. He hit your vehicle and did not report it and left the scene. If he admits to it why did he not report it? The cops are not doing their job..IMHO. They need to talk to the driver of the truck that hit yours and get a statement. I call bogus on the cops.

Your right your insurance will probably go up. I would have your insurance company go after the guy that damaged your truck. Paying the deductable is not enough. I investigated many hit and runs when I was in the military. Something about this does not sound right.. If you have a paint transfer that is evidence and the cops should interview the driver of the vehicle you believe hit your truck. Best of luck.. I would pursue this issue until its made right.

I think it's pretty sad that a fellow officer would hit your car and walk away. I can only imagine what he had to say when you told him about your tailgate and how hiis paint managed to find its way on to your truck.

See that's the thing. It wasn't his car. We have a job where we work in nuclear launch control centers underground about 100 miles apart from base so we take government vehicles. It's one of those vehicles that hit it.

The problem is that four different people drove that vehicle on Wednesday when that vehicle came back with a dent and paint transfer. The guy who works in vehicle storage did not notice it due to huge amount of mud covering the truck by driving in snow in country roads.

Now I'm not sure if he's even really responsible, it could have been after the vehicle was checked back in and one of the people from vehicle storage might have done it. If the Security Forces (base cops) aren't going to open up an investigation, I'm not sure what else I can do.
