    Ask Ryan Millen :)

I know the original ones were pretty decent off road and the Aussies built them up.

It has been done, but I'd make sure you have the AWD version. Or just buy a 2nd/3rd Gen 4Runner.

Yeah I was gonna say most are FWD.

But is all wheel drive really an off road thing?

Four wheel drive and AWD don't work the same.

Electromagnetic clutch means wimpy rear diff, would not suggest anything beyond logging trails.

My forester did really well though, even has a special X Mode. I stopped offroading it due to the scratches it kept getting. Traded it for the Taco.

To be fair, Ryan Millen comes from a racing family and can rally pretty much anything. His rally rav4 has a surprising amount of stock parts too.

There are tons of AWD WRX running rallies, they probably have a better and more advanced AWD system but still AWD not 4X4. It's not going to be a hardcore crawler but you can do some light off-roading.

Yeah, you could get in some simple trails, but nothing dynamic I'm sure.

I guess it depends on the OP's view of "built for off-road".

There is some guys on here with a Prius they are building for "Off-Road". I'm sure a RAV4 would be awesome by comparison.

Ground clearance is an issue with the Rav4, the new ones only have 6.3 inches (Camry has 6.1). I don't like those numbers.

By built I was thinking along the lines of aggressive stance and beefed suspension and some meaty tires. I could see a first gen RAV4 being almost built like a samurai.

I could see that being a neat project. But can you fit 285s without lifting or trimming?

My local dealership offers a "pro" Rav4. AKA like 8 grand for some minor mods you could do yourself for under $3k.
