have a 17 Tacoma trd OR 4x4 and just purchased my icon stage 6 lift with 285/75/16 tires and was wondering if any 3rd gen Tacoma owner have done any regearing or is it even necessary. It's a dd on the weekdays but will be hitting the trails with my brother and friends on the weekends. I'm not too worried about the mpg lossage but more worried about the loss of power since the 3rd gen seems to have that lack of power. Any info would be really appreciated! Thanks!

Wait until your 5/60 warranty is up before you regear imo

It's necessary. I wouldn't worry about the warranty. Highly doubt they'll find that.

I'm doing it myself with the help of my shop foreman, but norm, ally the front is 5.5hrs labor, and the rear is 3-4 hrs of labor

@Jon4x4 what brand gears and part #'s if you don't mind? The sport's don't use the same axle as the trd off road and the search bar and gear companies seem to only stock the 8.75" gears. My dealer won't get me the part number without twisting their are and wasting tons of my time... Thank you in advance!

I have 4.88s going into my truck right now. 285s, lockers and over 1000 lbs of added weight make it essential. If I just had the 285s on a dd/ww truck, I'm not sure I'd bother regearing. A lot of people don't.

I used G2 gears and install kits. I kinda had to butcher a install kit or two to make it absolutely correct.

nitro gear offers for the 8" though.

I have Nitro 4.88s in my 17 TRD OR. They do make them for the 8" rear in your Sport as well.

It's so much nicer after the regear. You lose all the sluggishness you get from the larger tires. Also less hunting for gears on the highway and it takes a lot of load off the transmission, which is the last thing these 6speed autos need.

Has anyone regeared 4 cyl MT? If so what size tires made it necessary?

Well seeing the 2.7's should have come with 4.10's, I'd say any larger size tire.

That being said, I've been on 35's with stock gears for almost 4 months now with my 2.7L

In the past year I went from 245/75r16, to 265/75r16, to 295/75r16, and now 315/70r17. The 265's were pretty noticable, but not bad. Anything larger than 32's you'll be wanting to regear.
