Solid choice man, when I heard about this truck being released in 2015 I was a little bummed. Damn she looks good!

No you're not really missing anything. I did like the interior and the seats better in the 3rd gen as well as a lot of the technology it has, however this time around I realized I didn't use most of it (besides nav and satellite radio) and the nice interior didn't justify the huge price difference that it would have been to get a brand new TRD Offroad (I paid $28,000 for mine with 10,900 miles). I'd rather have the 4.0 then the interior.

Thats good news, once these tires wear out I want to jump to 285's. I'm not sure if the 3.5 would have handled it well.

You're seriously not missing out. Driving the two back-to-back you can definitely tell the 3rd gen is newer due to slightly better materials and tech but I totally agree that the 2nd gen powertrain advantages trump all of the good things that the 3rd gen offers. I actually prefer the 2nd gen seats and the physical buttons on the head unit in my 2015.

 

What are you Pro and Baja guys doing to combat the rear end squat when the bed is heavily loaded or you add a camper shell? Since the truck appears level from the factory, I can already tell with the bed loaded up that there will be some definite bro lean happening.

I would think the cheapest/easiest fix would be an AAL or progressive AAL set. Has anyone gone this route or air bags to help give the rear end some additional lift on these Pros/Bajas?

 

I don't tow or haul, I did put a ICON Progressive AAL on and removed the overload. I wanted the rear end rake a little higher and it looks awesome.

 

How much height did you gain, 1-1.5"?

 

1.5, The Baja/Pros lift come in at 1.75 in front 0 in the rear. I keep saying at some point I'm gonna put on the toytec 1" top plate spacer specific for our coilovers to bring it to 2.75"......just been lazy about it. When I do though, I'll put that overload back in the rear.

 

I added Wheeler's 1.5" single add a leafs expecting it to have basically the same rake as a standard OR models without the front Baja 1.75" lift. This was a cheap and easy option. Also, ALL of the progressive AALs and spring packs with under 2" of lift will reduce the cargo carrying capacity, which I felt was kind of counter productive. Unfortunately, the Wheeler's springs gave me 2.5", and they refused to make it right. They were polite and all, but in the end I was given only two options: a refund of the part price (no original shipping) if I removed them and paid the (big time) return shipping, or about $7 off of a set of 3-degree shims. Rear lift over 1" usually causes pinion angle vibration issues unless you throw additional parts at it - like the shims. I feel cheated. I added a carrier bearing drop and it helped a little, but I still need to put the shims in to make it go away completely. It also now sits too high in the back unless it's loaded, so I will either have to take them off or add the Toytec 1" spacers to get closer to what I was after.

Do your research carefully. Lots of people love progressive AALs, but read the fine print and remember that your cargo and towing capacity will be reduced. There are few full spring packs out there that offer 2" or less, and they too reduce carrying capacity - flexy and comfortable for sure, but that's the price. Lots of folks love Ride Rite airbags, and I agree they are likely the best solution if you don't want a lot of lift and want to keep or increase your stock carrying capacity, but there is the added complexity and cost to consider. Do you want to use a hand pump to level your truck every time you load it? If not you're going to need on board air. Again, they really do work well, but hoses and fittings and wires and switches and...not for me.

I wanted simple, bulletproof, and load carrying performance that was equal to or greater than stock without excessive lift. I'm now not sure this exists. You may need to decide what area your are most comfortable compromising. In my case performance trumps comfort, so I will probably end up lifting the front, and I may then just go ahead and get 2.5" spring packs that maintain the stock cargo capacity since I'm at 2.5 inches already.

 

Do you notice a difference in ride quality?

 

Interesting. How is the load carrying capacity decreased and by how much? I couldn't imagine it being much. I am with you on the Ride Rites though. Seems like a decent solution but I am wary of the complexity of adding line, potential air leaks, etc.

 

Mine rides like absolute butter.... I love it!!!
