Oversized Pure One Filter

I have a 2010 2.7L Access Cab 4x4. It is coming up on the 3k first oil change. I am giddy with excitement (except for the fact that it will probably be performed in freezing temperatures).

After surfing various forums, I decided on the Pure One filter. The only drawback I have heard is that it is more restrictive than normal. To try to offset this somewhat, I chose a filter with the same threads and seal diameter, but with a can about 1.5x as long as the one specified. The 4cyl filter mount is vertical pointed down, so clearance is not a problem.

Has anyone else done an oversized filter?

I was curious about if it affected cold startup behavior. If it all looks good, I figure the extra filter media area will be better for when I start messing with extended drain intervals.

I am going with Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 (Advance Auto special) and probably will stick with the 5k oil change interval for now.

 

just wondering where you heard the pureone filter was more restrictive? I switched to pureone filers quite some time ago. I was using fram's but could not get one that did not develop a slight drip. I have had great luck with the pureone on my subaru and will definitly use one on the taco when the time comes, (only 300 miles). I will probably use the recomended size though. if you have a part number for the larger filter I will take a look though!

If the hood will clear it - it will be fine.
They have the same pressure ratings and have a anti drain valve . The are the same filter just one is almost 5 inches long the other 3.something inches long.
I bought one of the longer ones also for that extra bit of oil it contains for start up I just have not got around to see if it has clearance under the hood yet - no time and bad weather

Models 3614 vs 3600 in the Fram designation ( save your anti Fram stuff I am not into it)

 

PureOne's are a bit more restrictive due to their increased filtering capabilities. The increased pressure is minimal and nothing to worry about. Here is an extended filter on the 1GR (not my picture). The owner does state that there are no clearance issues with this filter.

 

i use a regular pure one on my 2.7, no issues. it already uses 6 quarts of oil...thats alot for a 4cyl. to start with.

 

Thats not where our filters are <--very jealous of that....would be nice though.

Although we do use the same oil filters. so that part # he has can be used on the 2.7

 

Yeah dumb ass mistake on my part. Totally missed the 2.7l comment. Ah well.

PL20195 is the one I bought. The part number listed for the 4cyl & 6cyl was PL10241. Based on the BobIsTheOilGuy forums, either one should work for either engine.

As far as restriction, I just figured that anything I can do to reduce the amount of work the engine has to do is a good thing. It also (theoretically) should reduce leaks.

 

I've used couple different size and brands of filters. do yourself a favor and keep one filter of the oem size near by. Diameter of the can NP but length can be.
