Splicing wires for aftermarket headunit

What is the best (or perfectly acceptable) way to splice my new Pioneer AVIC-Z110BT wires? Thanks in advance.

 

soder... Only way to go.

 

I've soldered a little bit before. I feel pretty comfortable with it but I'm not sure what type of solder I should get for this application if I go that route.

 

just normal rosen core should be fine. I never really messed around with flux but prerunnerseth has lots of experience soldering.

 

Thats what I was thinking. I don't think the normal flux would be good in this project because the wires are small. The rosen core solder should work fine then it sounds like. I didn't want to spend the money before the research was completed. Thanks for your help.

 

No Prob. I went to radioshack and picked up a new soldering iron and rosen core like two weeks about and spent $13 if that helps. It is a 40W or 45W iron so it heats up really hot.

 

40/60 rosin core solder. 40= 40% lead, but i forget what 60 stands for. i do all my wiring with that solder. go to radioshack and tell them you need solder and what your application is, mention 40/60 rosin core and get the thiner stuff. not the "pencil lead size" i believe the size that should work is 8oz.

 

use heat shrink too, just to throw that out there

 

Does the heat shrink need to be rated for voltage?

 

not that i know of i believe its just in different sizes for the thickness of the wire

heat shrink is just like electrical tape to cover up the bare wire but makes for a more professional look. make sure to put the shrink tube on the wire before you solder

 

heat shrink pre solder is key, especially after u get that perfect solder and have to cut in apart, that and tight places

 

like everyone else said solder is the way. Just make sure you do it all in the house and not in the truck! Its alot easier when everything is laid out on the table.

 

i must be the only person that uses wire nuts with a little electrical tape to connect everything.

nah just kidding. soldering is just a more reliable solution and once it is soldered the odds of it working it loose are damn near impossible.

 

Does anyone know if I'm better off splicing the grounds together (from stereo wiring harness to factory harness) or should I ground straight to the chasis behind the stereo? In past installs I've just connected the black grounds together and called it good.

 

i just used the factory ground for my pioneer 4100 dvd and have not had any probs

 

I have a dvd headunit and mine is grounded via factory wire.

 

aah pioneer 4100.. good choice, i got the 3100 and it does me right but i wish i had the bigger screen
