I used to tie all my flies back when I had time and your absolutely right tying isn't cheaper. I found places online that sell great flies for a buck or less.
Pm me if u want to know some good cheap fly dealers.

I normally buy some stuff from a local shop, basically buy information about what's going on, on the stream. I tie some as I have the supplies, then order some from online shops. Every once and a while, cablea's will have a good deal or two on dozens of buggers and larger streamers.

Same thing the past two of weeks for me. Most likely the fish u encountered were "midging". These can be some of the most frustrating fish to catch. If you see the fish rolling on the bottom and quickly rising up try fishing two small midge patterns just under the surface. Those fish are keying in on a drifting/ascending midge pupa and will rise to eat it. When you see rings or bubbles in a Trouts rise that's a dead give away of them eating adults. A "sloppy" or Splashy rise is them grabbing the emerger. A guy fishing the same pool as me didn't catch one fish with his midges on the bottom. Once he lightened up his split shot he started to hook a few.

On those days, I normally tandem with a Griffith's gnat and a zebra midge (bead head) dropper, and adjust the depth of the dropper until I start catching them. i'll start deeper with 2' between them, and go shallower by 2" or so until they bite.

As it gets closer to spring, i'll still use the gnat, but replace with a bwo nymph.

I use the dry dropper a lot when I see a good amount risers. Lately it's been the random rise.
Can't wait for the Bwos. One of my favorite bugs.

What's your favorite(s) fly rods of all time? In general I've always been a fan of sage rods but lately their moto has been fast and faster tapers. Winston has always felt to mushy for me for anything but dry flies. Scott rods to me have no personality. What are you guys using and liking?

I haven't bought any Sage rods, or Winston. I have a few TFO's I like a lot, and use the hell out of them.

I've thrown a few tfo rods and thought they loaded rather well. They were the tfo professional series I believe.

I think they do, but I don't really have a basis for comparison. For the money, I like them.

Meh. You get what you pay for. Flies under a buck are almost always tied in the Philippines and are pieces of shit in my experience. I tie my own or support my local shop. No big box store flies for me.

Broke down and bought a pair of Simms G3 guide boots today. My wife told me to get them so I got them before she changed her mind!

Yeah, I tried a few things. Drier lint in various colors can be used as dubbing if spun correctly. The fibers aren't very long but I've made a few midges out of it and caught fish. We had a Lhaso Apso dog that I stole certain brown, white, and tan hair from. Carpet fibers can work if the color is something you like. I've picked up random bird feathers while playing golf or doing yard work. I've run out of lead wrap the night before a fishing trip using streamers. I piece of baling wire, while not as dense, worked just fine along the body of a streamer. I will occasionally wander around hobby lobby with my wife going one direction and I another. I've found some multi colored thread that made a very successful lighting bug. I found a piece of black nylon ribbon webbing that my wife had laying around. It is the most realistic beetle wing I've found. This picture was one of my first attempts tying it over a piece of black foam with a little white indicator on top. Ugly but it really works on small mountain streams. Keep your eyes open and be creative.

My 7'-6" 4wt Sage DS2. Should of bought a 6 and 8wt to go with it. Have a 6wt St. Croix Avid that does a nice job with steamers.

Well I went back to Stone Mountain today and no luck again. Spotted some fish but couldn't get them to bite. I ran into another fisherman and he had only caught one all day. Since it was overcast I tried the black bugger first until I broke it off and only had one with me. I tried out the dry I tied the other day with no success but it wasn't a good day for dries anyway. I tried a moth larvae nymph that a local fly shop owner gave me and tried high sticking a midge but by then I was fishing holes where I had already spooked the fish. The rain certainly didn't help any. Next weekend I may try the Nantahala or Cherokee. Anyone fishing in NC or VA?

Anyone have an easily tied/simple Japanese beetle pattern they want to share? Terrestrials are deadly on a couple of the local spring creeks and I'm looking for something that the fish haven't seen a thousand times.

I live in Yadkin county about 40 minutes from stone mtn. Where are you from? Were you fishing the delayed harvest section or one of the wild streams? If you were fishing the DH streams, an egg, squirmy wormy, or something purple will work. If you were fishing the wild streams, they are tough because the water gets very hot for trout in the summer. There aren't too many fish in there. But midges should work there. Let me know if I can help ya out anymore!
