no worries man! this thread is a hell of a lot to dig through so I was hoping to find a general bed rack thread so I can try to decide on rack height. I'm currently thinking of building my own rack where the rack & an RTT won't break the cab roof line to minimize noise and mileage loss but I'm slightly concerned about storage limitations both under and on a rack that short. Basically looking to see some lower rack & RTT combos fully geared and packed up to ease my worry. I'm new into overland stuff; maybe I need to just eat the noise and drag and run a tall rack.

Awesome, thanks for the input. Sounds like the Ayer will do the job.

Exactly why I just went with the KB voodoo mid height I like the lower profile and when I put a RTT on it won't be sticking way up. Once I came across overlanding I knew it would be something I need to do. I guess we will see

I posted this over in the Tepui thread, but this one seems to get more action:

After much deliberation, I finally dropped the order for a kukenam sky.

I still haven't figured out my rack situation yet. What's the best way to haul one home in the bed, without a rack? Is there an orientation that will be less prone to damaging it?

MT stuff, RTT stuff, the usual.
I just put it in the bed with one side on the bedrail IIRC

That's kinda what I figured, but I wasn't sure if I needed to be worried about the weight of he tent bending something if I put the wrong side down.

I just mounted mine last week. I went with tall Relentless crossbars because they were the right height to put it about even with the roof rack. No picks of the bed loaded. This trip was just an overnight and I only have one Plano box in there. That said, at this height I was still able to crawl in the bed and open the case without it being terribly uncomfortable. I wouldn't go any lower and expect to be able to get in there. But the case would still fit fine. I do plan on building a false bottom with drawers which will rest on the ledge that goes around the interior of the bed. With that in place, I expect I'll have just enough room to slide the plano case in there.

My wife and I went with the Kukenam (standard, not XL), I am 5'10 and 160#, so not a large guy, she is 5'2 and prob 115#, we feel VERY comfortable in ours, there is room on either side of us and also a good 18-20" of space at our feet. Hope this helps. And Adam is great to work with when purchasing, responds to questions and PMs quickly and can answer any questions you have. I ordered my tent through him and got the TW discount and had my tent less than a week later

I dunno, I'm gonna have to disagree with @Box Rocket on this one. There's no way I could sleep with the Wife in my Ayer. Granted, I'm a big dude, so maybe 2 smaller people could lol, but even still, I like my space when I sleep, and I feel like I'd be trying to share a Twin bed with the wife lol. Even just by myself in the Ayer I've been considering an Autuna(sp?) just got a hair more room and fitting my Son in when he's old enough for camping and/or the dog. In other words, the Ayer is for me, I'll probably be picking up a Kukenam XL for the family at some point once I figure out a better rack system to fit both

FWIW I'm 6' and a buck 85 along with my roommate and we are about the same size. We both fit fine with a backpack each in the Ayer, wasn't cramped too much but was comfortable.

I'm struggling like crazy, probably a failure with the search function, but can anybody point me toward a write up or instruction where someone mounted a CVT to their prinsu? I just wanted to do some reading on it today before I dive into mine soon.

Can anybody give advice for putting in a different mattress? I'm thinking of getting a 3" memory foam mat and was wondering if anybody here has done similar.

Any specific mattress that you found works well?

I'm currently looking at this one:
    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H2OCWU...lid=3BF5HYTCATF9R&coliid=I3GGM1VA6FGFPU&psc=1

I realize I'll need to chop it a bit to get it to fit - which is true of any mattress I assume.

    CVT Shasta.

    Thanks.

Doesn't sound like you're disagreeing with me at all. ;) Some people like a lot of space, and if you're a bigger dude the Ayer could feel cramped with two. At the same time, there are MANY of all sizes that sleep 2 in the Ayer comfortably. Everyone is a little different with what is comfortable for them.
