Wondering if anyone has installed a roof rack on a Tacoma with the optional moon-roof?

I see that a moon-room comes with the TRD DC OR model when the "Premium and Technology" package is added. I want the P&T package mainly for other things that are included, but I need to be able to install a roof rack for my kayaks. Something like the Thule or Rhino racks HERE.

It LOOKS like the moon-roof would not interferr with a roof rack, but then I've never installed a rack on a vehicle having a moon/run-roof.

    Thanks ya'll.

I think you'd be good with clearance, but if you never planned on using it as a moonroof anyway you could just not open it.

I believe the roof drops down/in/back. Therefore, no problem.

I've come across some racks that have the opening for the roof so that you don't have bars across in that area.

Thanks. Good point about just not opening it. I really can't see where just having the moon roof would be a concern for putting on a roof rack.

I ought to be okay, as one cross bar would be near the front windshield, the other near the rear of the roof. Nothing should be near the moon roof "hole" except the kayaks themselves, and they would be a couple of inches above it. It would be handy to look through the roof and check on how the 'yaks were riding up there.

So, there should be no problem if you're going with an OEM roof rack. Toyota couldn't possibly f*ck that up... or could they?

Make sure you check the rack fluid. :anonymous:

I have the moon roof and I installed the OEM roof rack. No clearance issues. No issues at all, it's great. I am happy with it. Let me know if you want pix.

There's no horizontal bars on the OEM roof rack?

There are crossbars. Thats what's great about the OEM rack. They swing out on each side.

I recently installed the Prinsu rack and I have it configured where a bar sits right above the moonroof. There are no issues w/ popping up the moonroof.

I'd forgotten Tacoma could come with a roof rack, never seen one around here. Yes, I would like to see your photo, Thanks.

Look around your local dealer(s), I'd be surprised if they didn't have it on a truck or two.

Couple of pics in my gallery show the rack, though I've not taken any specifically highlighting it.

Also, a good reminder on the OEM roof rack is the cross-bars pivot at one end and attach at the other. For normal daily driving you leave them aligned front-to-back with the base. When you need to use them you swing each one over to the position shown by tacoscott16's post.

Hey, I just made a post about this a week ago after getting Rhino Rack installed - having the moon roof this was also a concern of mine. The crossbar installed goes over the moon roof about the halfway point, but with Rhino Rack the bars pop off very easy and you can vent the moonroof w/ out hitting the bar. Being bolt on it has the highest load rating between OEM and Yakima/Thule. I covered a few of these points in my post because they were all concerns I had myself with loading/unloading Kayaks.

Looks like there is very little clearance between the wind deflector and the OEM racks's crossbar. Is the wind deflector part of the roof rack or the moon roof. Or is it an extra option? I did not notice a wind deflector on the one Tacoma I drove with a moon roof, but I really didn't pay much attention....it was COLD that day! On my wife's car she has a wind deflector and having the roof open is wonderfully quiet and not very windy; our previous car had no deflector and having the roof open caused a real windstorm!

I wonder if I could still mount a kayak "cradle", like a Yakima "J-Hook" on the OEM rack's cross bars? Can the position of the OEM crossbar be adjusted forward or back? The weight limit of 100 lbs is fine, as my two kayaks weigh 90 lbs or less even if I stuff the paddles, life jackets, etc inside.
