has anyone done a wiring mod so both lights in the tail lights work as a signal and both light up when braking instead of just the bottom section I'm sure visibility would be better and aestheticly look better.

Should be simple enough, just need to create a jumper wire that taps the signal lights and brake lights together. once it gets warmer here I might give it a go.

I wired mine so both bulbs are brake lights and replaced the clear back up bulbs with amber ones for turn signals. Also installed new backup lights under the bumper. Doing this was less wiring than combining them. You can not just wire them together as the brake would override the turm signal, so you would have to use a trailer light converter or wire your lights to the towing harness. To do what I did you would need to disconnect the backup wire and run it to other lighs, cut the signal wire off the signal socket and connect to the backup socket amd then splice the original signal socket to the brake light socket.

I'm not buying that. As long as his truck passes State Inspection, he should be good to go.

Are you referring to the OP? The problem I see with that is you would need dual filament bulbs for both turn signals and brakes.

Limited wheels, extra rope hooks in bed.
I'd buy a kit to convert the whole light to brake lights

Then just have the entire light blink for turn signals.

I like our tail lights but not the way they halfway light up when applying the brakes.

I debated about using an amber 921bulb(in reverse socket) and relocating Reverse lights to under bumper. But they just look tacky hanging there(IMO).
The ultimate way is to run a set of Switchback Amber/White (will require some minor modifications to bulb socket)

I went from; OEM reverse lights(SUCK)----->Led white 921 bulb(OK)--->V3 tritton(HOLY CRAP). Reverse is literally a spot light(the chrome reverse housing helps alot with projecting the light out)
I can tell a huge difference looking through the backup camera during night.

Yes all I would think you would need is a dual filiment for the the running light bulb

^ I think the problem that you are going to encounter when trying to make both lights the same,
is that you have THREE circuits(parking, brake, turn), and only a DUAL filament bulb.

For instance, what if your turn signal is on, and you are applying the brakes??
Both lights would be completely solid. And if you did get them to flash, how will I see your brake light?

Best way:: put the turn down in the reverse bucket, and use the upper section for Running light/Brake.

From the factory both the turn signal and brake lights are dual filament bulbs, just wired separately. Combining the signals is the issue, just like wiring a truck with amber signals to a trailer.

The Tacoma already has wiring with the combined signal if it has the factory trailer tow wiring. To use this you would run the left side off the violet wire from the trailer harness to the yellow and the light blue wires on the turn signal and brake light sockets and on the right side the the light blue wire from the trailer harness to the blue and light blue wires on the brake and turn signal sockets.

    Trailer.jpg

If you don't have or don't want to use the trailer harness then the same could be done with a trailer light converter available at any auto parts store. it would be wired as follows: on the input side of the converter: yellow wire on left side of truck to yellow, light blue wire from right side of truck to green, light blue wire from left side to red, white wire with black stripe to white. Then from the converter output: yellow to both left side sockets and green to both right side sockets.

Here is my take on this mod. I used tail as turn diy from diode dynamics to make this possible. I forgot I had this originally for my TLX. Diode dynamics noted in an email that I must use LEDs not incondesent bulbs. I purchased two sets of philips 7443 red and used universal resistors to prevent hyper flash.
I'll try to upload a video.

Can someone show me how to upload video?
