** Update** 2/2/2017 check bottom of thread
Sooo this happened last night. Been raining the past few days, so going through some puddles etc. Well I was cruising down a paved road and I start hearing a thud similar to a flat tire so I pulled over to the side of the road and lost all acceleration (obviously bc driveshaft disconnected). But I get out and to my luck I see the driveshaft disconnected from carrier and laying on the wet asphalt. It's 11:30 at night so I got a ride home from my girlfriend and just went by this morning to take a few pics and assess the damage. I was in pretty bad need of a new Carrier bearing so I'm pretty sure that's the culprite. But could of also been something else ? Hoping you guys could help me out with some feedback /advice. I have some pics below. I'm hoping I can fix it myself and it's just a Carrier bearing. Doesn't seem to be any other damage besides some scrapping on the head where the driveshaft is touching the floor. But could be more ? Man, I was pretty damn bummed to see my Taco out of service with a driveshaft hanging on the floor :/. Anyway thanks for the help in advance guys. My house is about a mile down the road so I got to figure a way to tow it over lol. Here's some more pics.

Is that a piece of the driveshaft or the carrier bearing ? What would cause that?

Nut should be staked and shouldnt just come off. Im gona say it was improperly installed. Way it looks to me youl need a new carrier bearing and it should just go back together

Not sure what you mean by headpiece but yea you can remove driveshaft and get a tow. If your 4x4 you can just engage it and continue to drive truck with just the front wheels.

I was browsing and had a question on this. Can you go over 55 mph this way?
I know when you engage 4wd the manual says don't go over 55

Cool man thanks for the help!. Hopefully the bearing solves it. So you think the carrier bearing was the problem ?

no. carrier bearing just supports the driveshaft. that part of driveshaft should be physically held together by a large nut that goes on the threads you can see before the splines.

A bad carrier bearing alone is unlikely to cause this. It looks like someone didn't put the drive shaft together properly.

Ive done faster than that quite a bit. Going over 55 in itself should cause no harm to anything. think thats more to do with engaging and disengaging. With rear driveshaft unhooked there wont even be any binding soo...?

So do I need that Nut? Or Will installing a new carrier bearing and putting it all back together I'll be fine ? Would that driveshaft dragging have caused any damage it only dragged for a few feet. Thanks so much for the input guys. Don't know much about these parts so. I'm going to order the oem bearing tonight

yes youl need the nut. like said thats what holds it together... Cant tell you if driveshaft is damaged or not. doesnt seem to be in pics besides some scrapes but something could still be bent or knocked out of balance.

In addition to the nut there are 2 "spacers" that would have fallen out.
Along with damage to the driveshaft the differential pinion bearing preload could be messed up from the impacts.

I'm guessing the nut is still inside here: [IMG]

Take the 4 bolt off and inspect...
