sure don't understand complaint about leg room. I'm 6'2" with 36 inch inseam and more than enough leg room.

The wrangler is fun and would be better for a second vehicle for me. The ride is rough with solid axles. Its a beast off-road. My FJ was a beats off-road, so it was the best of both worlds.
Mileage was better on the Tacoma before I added 285's and a 3 inch lift.

I cannot sit in my chair, and extend my leg completely straight. My feet will be really up against the firewall. I have a 34 inch inseam at 5'11. Maybe your arms are longer? Personally I would rather not have to extend my arms fully in order to touch the steering wheel, I like to be relaxed when I drive.

It's not so much the transmission as it is the engine I think. There really isn't much going on in the lower RPM band. I have a manual transmission and feel the need to cruise at ~2500 RPM to avoid accelerating at a snail's pace if I hit the gas.

Feel bad for you auto guys that are stuck at a 1100 RPM cruise. I nope'd right out of the auto test drive. It seemed to either be 1100 RPM or downshift to 4500 RPM. I haven't driven one since the "transmission update" though.

In Canada we call it a Sport "Upgrade" - I think its the tech package for the US? Moonroof, BSM, wireless charging, etc...

    So far none... :(
Agree 100%. Although the big difference might be that I live in the Caribbean, hence the Toyo tires work great for me.

I have to pint out that I upgraded from a 2.7L 4cyl 2008 to a 2017 TRDSport DC 6Cyl. In my opinion, the engine does what it was design for. Sure it seems a little bit slow for a V6, but it sure compensates with MPG. This one consumes gas like my old 4cyl. Best of luck with yours.

yeah Canada has the trd sport and then the sport upgrade.. the sport upgrade is the BSM, wireless charging and moonroof.
we do not get the best entune jbl headunit unless you get the limited.

i have the trd sport which has the nav etc but lacks the pandora, traffic and weather options on the radio.
canada kind of got jipped on the trim levels and options IMO.

also the worst is we had the tsb for the transmission released in august of 2016 but im still being told that we don't have the REV.1 update yet. some people in other provinces are saying they got it done here but my dealerships here are acting like they know nothing about it. which is frustrating. iv called toyota Canada but have been playing phone tag back and forth for weeks now.
im just frustrated over the whole thing. i know some people will say to deal with it but it is noticeable enough that it greatly affects the drivibility and makes it horrible to drive. certain trucks are worse than others as you know.

i would have got the manual but in Canada you cannot get a manual in a double cab or a long box. i think the US is the same way.

You can get 2017s in 6MT DC now.
You can get DCSB in Manual in 2017 now. Only seen Sports though - Stricklands Toyota in Stratford, Ontario has one.

I do have long arms also. In addition, I like to be as far from that airbag as I can. I saw what it did to a friend of mine.

Thanks OP for a good honest review. I have just over 29K miles on my 2016 TRD DCSB auto 4x4, and I am happier with some things that annoyed me at first, but still bothered by some niggling issues that leave me scratching my head: "What were they thinking??!! This would have been so easy to do right!" For what it's worth, I'm about 5'11" and I raised the rear of my seats; huge improvement. Also, I just completed a 2000 mile road trip for the first time since the transmission TSB and I think it was MUCH better than before, to the point where I can't really complain about it anymore, though I think highway gas mileage has dropped a bit. My other observations after almost 30K miles: the infotainment system is poor, the OEM Wrangler Adventures are quite good in the snow, and the OEM Bilsteins are basically shot despite mostly on-road use. Overall, I'd probably rate the truck as an 8/10; for context, it's my first Tacoma but I've had an 80-series Land Cruiser, a T100, a Prius, a Ford Ranger, several VW's and Alfas, a BMW and a Chevy Vega, among many others, over the last 42 years.

Great balanced review...agree with most of your comments.
My rating after 11,000km is a 5/10...and I'm also strongly considering upgrading with a 2" lift.

I finally got to test drive the 17 tacoma. Super disappointed with the power of the truck. I understand it is midsize but my fat ass FJ had way more power. The screens made my Sierra screens look high def. I feel Toyota skimped on quality and power.

It's not lacking in power. You just gotta wind her up past 3500 RPM to find it.

Regarding tacoma ergonomics, this is my approximate driving position:

As someone who drives a 95 base model Taco with a bench seat, I'm really loving the complaints around here about 3rd gen ergonomics, power, cabin noise, etc.

    It's toyota's obsession with severely angled headrests & gangsta-lean seatbacks. ;)
