Slight miss?

Is it really that scarce for you guys? Pure-gas.org has stations all over the place for me.

 

It is but the point is our trucks are supposed to run fine on 87. And I dont want to pay $20 a tank extra for ethanol free especially when I drive 60 miles round trip per day for work.

 

Supposed to, just like the TCU isn't supposed to need multiple updates after release... but the reality isn't always so ideal. Sucks it's that much more for you...I only have to pay about 30 cents more for e0 per gallon or about 5 bucks more a tank. Totally worth it.

 

There are a few over the border in NY, about an hour and a half. I will head up there this week with the truck and (3) 5 gallon gas cans to try.

 

Glad to see this thread taking off. I got my truck in nov 2015. It did this issues on the test drive butI was to blinded with buying a new truck that I didnt think much of it. 23,000 miles later and its as bad as ever. Took it to the dealer many times and they said it was normal lol! Glad to hear the manuals are having the same issue. That tells me its more motor related than anything. Lets keep pounding toyota with this until they come up with a fix for out 30-40 mid size truck. This is BS!

 

I am having this same issue as described in this post. I first thought it was the transmission slipping and then thought it might be a vibration in the driveshaft. I am having what can only be described as a tugging feeling when driving and the truck is about to shift. I can feel it even more going up hills. I have had the fluid filled (1 quart low) and the TSB's done. I just got back from driving with a regional tech and he said he has the same truck and they do not have a fix for it yet and used the dreaded words "normal characteristic of the truck" because his does it as well. The good news is that he did feel the issue while driving it and made screenshots while the computer was hooked up to the truck. I had a case open with toyota before this and I asked the tech if he reports back to corporate and he said they are two different sections as they do not talk to each other. I know this is not a normal characteristic because I just had a long bed which drove amazing and decided I wanted a short bed instead. My question is that if this is not fixed, has anyone thought about pursuing the lemon law? I truly love this truck but refuse to put up with this characteristic for the amount that I paid for it.

 

My last fill up was with 89 octane and has helped (but definitely not fixed) the problem. Next I'll try boat gas...which in my neck of the woods is ethanol free 89.

All this being said, I don't think it will be worth the increase of +/-.25 a gallon for 89 or +/-.55 a gallon for ethanol free.

I'm somehow relieved others note the issue and it's not just me.

 

Managed to fill the truck yesterday with 91 Ethanol free and picked up 15 gallons for fill up tank #2. Seems the MPGs have gone up right away (expected) and the slight miss MAY be gone. Want to run both tanks through before confirming. If it does fix, then I will run 2 tanks of 93 10% ethanol through it to see what happens, then 89 10% ethanol before going back to regular. I will share my findings here as well as with Toyota Corporate under my case number that I opened a few months ago.

 

I'm taking my truck in tomorrow for the 10k service. Now after experimenting with both 87 and 89 octane, I feel the problem is much worse with 87 octane. Next fill up will be with non ethanol 89.

I'll mention the issue to the service advisor again tomorrow and wait for him to give me that blank look and then proceed to tell me the new TSB should fix the issue. The miss/shudder or whatever the hell it is...is driving me crazy. It's my biggest gripe with the truck.

Any more thoughts out there on what problem we are all experiencing?

 

So far, the 91 non-ethanol SEEMS to be helping...or it may be in my head. I need more miles/testing with other fuels.

 

I can't tell any difference between 87 and 89. I'll try 91+ next tank. Nearest EtOH free pump is 30 miles one way.

 

The 91 ethanol free, IMO, fixes this. Question is, why? Is it an octane issue? An ethanol issue? Testing continues.

 

I have no idea...but it also, after several tanks, seems to have fixed the crap shifting behavior of this transmission too. No idea how but a month or two ago, after several back to back 91 E0 tanks, the shifting at 3600 miles just one day got awesome. Like almost to the same degree power/response/shift points as when ECT mode was enabled.

Went to 87 E10 and immediately, before pulling into traffic, noticed the crap shift points/throttle response was back as well as the surging. I'm about 80 miles into my third consistent tank of 91 E0 again and while the surging has been resolved since tank 1, just today the positive transmission behavior is back. 3 trips today all with the same great responsiveness I noted at that time.

I'm filling up with 91 E0 from here on. I cannot explain through logging (what I'm able to log) why immediate/learned behavior is so vastly improved, but I'm sticking with it.

 

Hypothetically speaking, IF this is the magic fix we are needing, if our vehicles REQUIRE E0 91, what do we do? Do we take this info to Toyota corporate and demand a fix?

 

We really think we have to get evidence of what learning has taken place on this fuel as opposed to 87 e10. My buddy is a mechanic at Lexus and taught me everything I know about tuning as we were both subaru autocross enthusiasts. He's suggested we could do some logging for the surging using techstream as he knows what to look for but at this point I don't want to put that gas back in lol.

 

I finally got the TSB REV1 update today along with my 10k service and noticed an improvement with shifting and throttle response. I haven't driven it enough to report on this thread's topic. However, I assume most reporting here have already done the REV1 TSB and are still experiencing issues.

I tried to explain the issue to the service writer. She looked me dead in the eyes and said "just use the ECT button".

 

Surging will be present with ect too. And my positive behavior took like 1500 miles on Rev 1 and several tanks of consistent 91 e0 use to truly get good.

Stick with it...I'm dying to know if you all see the same seemingly overnight change in TCU behavior.

 

Have you tried E10 91 or 93?

 

Yeah but not consistently back to back. For the first 3k miles or so I was running 91 or 93 most tanks but it was mixed use with ethanol and wasn't e0 multiple tanks consistently until around that 3k mark.

 

About 1/2 tank done with the 93 E10, slight miss has NOT returned as of yet. Going to continue with it for this tank and one more tank before trying 89 E10. Fingers crossed that it is an octane issue, not an ethanol one.
