I have a Prerunner has surprised myself recently when I made it in some places where the other Tacos had to use 4wd. I chuncked up my back tires really bad and had to be towed up a bunch of places, but one part made me feel on top of the world when I did it with the rear locked. I have been in some bad spots and have had to be towed, but there has been other spots that I have been able to get out of because of the rear locker and All Terrian tires.
The two things you need to get through some tough spots are tires and a rear locker. Know your limits and go with at least one other person if you aren't familiar with the area.

Prerunners FTW! In So Cal its (almost) all you need. Spindles, good tires, and a locker and I've gotten almost everywhere I've wanted to go. The trick is to go with someone with 4wd and you're golden.

 

Hey I'm glad I found this thread. The areas of TX my friends have recently taken me, have just a slight bit of mud mainly semi rocky hill country. I just purchased my 11' trd sport last week. I notice how you say the thing about the rear locker. My truck didn't come with the electric one. Before I start investing in suspensions and other off road goodies, Would it be a good idea to invest in a rear locker?

yes. get a rear locker. if you are open diff 2wd right now there isnt another mod you can do to give you more traction.

But seriously, I off roaded in my 2wd open diff 2004 4runner for a while with the only mod being geolander at-s tires in the rear (no not even both front and back because the front ht tires still had some tread). Not that it mattered cuz it was 2wd. but nonetheless, I did almost everything my friends did (hills may have taken a couple tries but I would get them). Before I had the tires in the rear I would get stuck all the time but as soon as I got the all terrains I never got stuck even in deep sand and creek crossings. That being said it was a 4runner which has more weight over the rear axle but still, you would be amazed what you can do in 2wd.

 

I offroad in my prerunner every chance I get. I should have bought a 4*4 but Ive put to much money into mine to get a new one now. But my next one will be a 4*4 for sure. My buddy in a F150 with a 6 inch lift and big MTs went off roading with me. I followed him through the mud the sand and the hills. I never got stuck. I have good tires though with 300 pounds of sand bags in the bed, and there wasnt any rock crawling or anything. I was surprised at what I could do. and if I did get stuck he would have been able to pull me out. Have fun and make sure someone is there who can help if you get stuck. Im waiting for the day my prerunner cant handle something but it hasnt happened yet.

 

Well i noticed yesterday i started going downhill on a way too sloped Rocky surface. I tried to reverse slowly then have it a bit of gas my drive wheel just spun on a rock. Now I have chunks of rubber missing out of that tire. I eventually want a pre runner type set up with mid or long travel suspension but figure a locker would be a good start point.

 

This thread makes me feel better about having a prerunner.

 

Ive done stuff with my prerunner i wouldnt think was possible. Sometime you have to watch your lines, and sometimes you just need the momentum. One time i got stuck on a incline, luckily i had enough room to go back and gas it forward. With the wheels locked a tires spinning i made it to the top.

Same. Got around plenty in 2WD, but TBH the first time I hit a trail that required 4x4 I was so fuckin nervous from my 2WD experiences, once I got to the top of the hill with no issue it was one of the best feelings ever. The whole time I kept thinking I needed more skinny pedal but 4LO just trucked right up

 

ofcourse there is no substitute for a 4wd. I have a 03 2wd prerunner with 120k miles. I was currently looking into getting a new 2017 4wd tacoma, but i couldnt justify the price they are asking for one, when i have a perfectly good car running at home. Guess i will have to do with 2wd for a few more years.

 

You can do a lot with the right tires and pressure even with 2wd

 

Yes, i have noticed. Adding a little weight in the bed also helps.

 

No probs and no regrets. Use your head, get a winch and some body armor. Try not to go off trail unless you have a buddy! I'm always out in so cal having fun hit me up!
