Who ever put that black box in has no idea what the hell they where doing. You don't use freaking electrical nuts in a automobile. Ugh. I doubt its a chip. But who knows. It's "the black box recorder" open it up. For all we know it could be a tracker to keep tabs on where the truck is.

ya, I'm gonna leave it alone there are no markings on it. The truck runs like it is and i wouldn't put it in the new truck without knowing exactly what it is.

My buddy wants to know why not?? He actually never has used them in a car, but would have in a heart beat had not had butt connectors readily available.

Unless butt connectors are taboo also, then disregard the above paragraph.

The short answer is that they're made for solid core wire and don't get a solid purchase on stranded wire.

An A750f is an A750f no matter which vehicle it came out of, right? Just searching around and found one on eBay for $335 out of a 4Runner. It would work, right?

All A750f's fit the 4.0l v6 and 4.7l v8, but the trans out of the 4runners are on average like 4-500 cheaper than those out of tacomas which doesn't make sense to me

Nothing wrong with using wire nuts in a car. They are made to join the wires together and they do a great job of it. If you use the correct size nut and get it tight, that joint will be stronger then the wire itself. Now I don't use wire nuts on my vehicles, I use butt connectors but if that's all I had at the time I wouldn't hesitate to use them
    Not true

I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I did auto installs for 5 years, and low voltage home installs for 7 years, and every time I saw anyone (including myself) use wire nuts on stranded wire, they would eventually fall off or break the wire. It is incorrect and will only cause problems later on. The only way it works is if you solder the stranded wire essentially making it solid core.

There is a much better way to connect wire than even a butt connector or solder joint, and all you need is e-tape. You can solder it, but it is unnecessary. Strip a one inch section of insulation off of the wire you are connecting to and split the wires half on one side and half on the other to make an oval. Strip two inches off the end of the wire you want to connect to the existing wire. Feed the end of the new wire through the oval you made on the existing wire, then wrap tightly around the outside of the oval, compressing it back into a straight wire again. The wire cannot come loose and if it is pulled it will only get tighter, kind of like a chinese finger trap. You get a smaller loss than you do with a crimp connector also. Tape it up and you're done.

And that's not a bad thing, if it is done properly. It is overkill for the way I make connections, and is time consuming for no benefit. You also have to cut the original wire in order to get heat shrink on it. The way I do it leaves the original wire intact, minus some insulation removed. I have also never had a cold solder joint.
