i upgraded from an ayer to a CVT Mt Shasta for that reason... wanted to comfortably fit 2 and a 60lb lab

 

True true! I think once my kids get a little older I'll just completely ditch the Ayer. Or if I get a big bonus and decide to just buy a new tent lol.

 

Exactly. My almost 90lb lab mix came up there with me last time and I woke up back to back with him with my face almost against the wall and he was fully stretched out. (Asshole sleeper dog lol)

 

i share a queen mattress with the wife. i'd like at MINIMUM that size for my RTT. Most likely going to get the largest possible just for possible children with us later on. Not to mention im gargantuan.

 

This man needs 2 Kukenam XL's tied together lengthwise, otherwise RTT's are a no go

 

hahaha i can do a Kukenum XL and have plenty of room. Probably wont even need to use the ladder.

 

If its on the top of the mini van? I believe it. Just a small step up into the tent

From what I've seen any tent that says 2 - 3 man is going to be about the size of a full size mattress... Maybe a few inches narrower as well longer. The next step up is usually about the size of a king. The only one that I've seen that makes an in-between size (queen) is Geo. So I guess it depends on what you're accustomed to sleeping on. Being enclosed in a tent also has a way of making things feel smaller than they are. But if you're used to sleeping in small 2-person ground tents you may feel like the 2-3 man RTTs are plenty big enough.

 

I have the Shasta as well. A queen fits perfectly width wise, but is short on length. Doesn't matter to us since we only use that for sitting with feet on the ladder to put shoes on/off. We got a 1" memory foam and put it on the existing mattress. See below "Products Discussed in this Thread." It was $37.41 (pic added for reference). Made a huge difference. It's super comfy now.


EDIT - I'm about 155lbs and the wife is prob 130ish for reference.
FURTHER EDIT - I think a full is the correct width of the Shasta. Others can correct if needed.

 

When I get home later I'll see if I have pictures of mine hooked up but it is reaaaaly easy. Make sure the mounting rails on the bottom of the tent are perpendicular to the Prinsu cross bars. You're gonna slide the bolt heads into the mounting rail so there is one on either side of the Prinsu cross bar. Slide the supplied bracket onto the bolts and tighten the nuts down. Seriously, once you get it on the rack there is only one way for it to work and it will all make sense.

 

yeah this response and the ones earlier cleared it up pretty well for me. thank you. now to get 200+ lbs of tent up on top..

 

Good luck! When I picked mine up at CVT's shop we put it on with a forklift. Me and my roommate took it off and I was shocked at how heavy and awkward it was. I'm house shopping right now and I'm looking for a garage with a raised ceiling JUST so I can setup a winch to take that heavy bastard on and off...

 

yeah the house I just bought has too short of a garage for my truck, but I plan to build a shop with a tall door and ceiling to hoist it up.

 

Do you know if that extra inch would fit into the stock cover?

Also, what about when you fold the tent? Does memory foam flip over easily? I was assuming I'd have to cut mine in order to fold.

I know a queen width fits perfectly, but I was going to use the extra that I chop off the side of the king to place at the end, so the whole tent is covered.
