Clutch cancel is designed for when you are stopped on a steep hill and risk rolling backwards if you press in the clutch.

You place the vehicle in Low range, put it in 1st gear and then with engine off you turn the key and the starter will pull you up the hill until the engine starts.

You're in 1st gear/low range so the starter has plenty of torque and when the engine catches you're barely moving.

Not sure how well this would work with an electric transfer case shifter, but it's a common trick with manual trans 4x4s.

I don't get the push button start craze. What's the big deal? I know they will be on everything in the future but In my opinion all it does is change an already easy process that wasn't broken. I suppose you don't have to take your keys out which saves a little work but other than that it just adds failure points.

Frameless autodimming mirror with compass and homelink.

It's an option in Southeast Toyota region. I ordered my truck with it and love it.

BTW - it's a Gentex GENK-85A mirror so you could also just put it in aftermarket if you had to.

I imagine a mechanical start has more chance for failure than an electronic one.

I disagree. Ever looked up mechanical vs electronic safe locks?

You have the transponder, the receiver, and the wiring between the button and starter. All mechanical has is the wiring between the ignition and starter. Not to mention try running one of those transponders through your washer.

    Just my opinion.

I personally would rather just have a good old fashioned key.

I'm pretty sure Toyota is withholding the push button start to force the weak minded to purchase the auto instead.

You're oversimplifying keyed ignition in this day and age. There have been transponders on keyed ignitions for years. Definitely exists on the 3rd gen Tacomas with keys. I've not been curious enough to verify the keyed goes to an ECU but it for certain goes through a relay box and other stuff.

IMHO worrying about keyed vs PTS in terms of reliability given the level of overall complexity in these vehicles is meaningless. Nobody has hard data and whatever folks feel is based on anecdotal stories and their own underlying assumptions which clearly can be incorrect.

So the push button start is not a deal killer but it just seems like if I am buying a truck with all the bells and whistles for $40k, then it would have push button start and a damn garage door remote on the mirror.

Okay... it is what it is. We could argue it should have autodim and power folding side mirrors or any number of other features. It doesn't. Every vehicle is a rolling pile of trade offs; you choose whichever make and model most closely meets your needs.

The older framed Gentex autodim with homelink mirrors will work as well, I retrofitted one into my wife's Rav4 a couple years ago. Pretty easy job. This new frameless mirror is really nice though, and I was able to order it with the truck for invoice of $252. Just note that any of the Gentex mirrors will handle only three remotes.

Reliability wasn't my original point anyway, it was just what someone wanted to argue with me on. My original point was that you are trading one simple process for another. Is makes no difference, what is the big deal? Not buying the transmission you want over it is silly.

Agreed. PTS is a nice thing but very much ancillary if what you want is a M/T truck

Your garage door opener only has one button per remote? Maybe you should upgrade that. I use my phone to open all of them, the gate and to unlock the front door. ;)
