Hello Tacoma World! Brandy new here and posted a hello over in the "new user intro" area. Excited to be here!

I'm on the hunt for my first Tacoma - a 2nd gen with the "face-lift" i.e., 2012 to 2015. I'm buying this truck because of its reliability, great looks and HUGE aftermarket support. Win, win, win.

I'm looking for at least an Off Road (because of the locker), but I've also looked at the TX Baja and TRD Pros. What appeals to me is a slightly more capable truck right from the factory. I don't care about the exhaust or the graphics (I'd actually rather just delete them). But, that suspension looks fairly trick. Remote reservoirs, larger diameter shocks, etc. Seems like good value.

But is that TRD suspension worth the premium? Or can you replicate it easily enough with something similar (or better) from the vast aftermarket that exists for these trucks?

I'm trying to do sufficient research so I don't chase my tail... but figured I'd bring this to community. Hope this isn't too much of a newbie question, but really just trying to get an idea what the consensus is on those trucks.

    Best -
    Ted

I put 2k into my suspension Bilstein 6112 in front and 5160 remote resevoirs in the rear. But also upgraded the leaf springs to Old man emu dakars and the front upper control arms to Camburg ball joint UCA's. Rides better than stock TRD Offroad suspension but I have never driven a pro. The leafs will do better with adding weight, i have a fiberglass cap and then towing. It's all about what you need and want but the aftermarket is great for upgrades. Highly recommend Headstrong Offroad.

Thanks Jason. I've used Bilsteins in the past (5100s on a Nissan) and that setup was pretty much what I was thinking. Get an Off Road so it has the locker, then spend about $2-2.5k on a mild suspension lift.

When you say it "rides better than stock" do you mean off road, on-road, or all around (towing, etc.)? And how much lift does your truck on have the 4th notch? Sounds very similar to what I'm looking to replicate...

Thanks for the referral on Headstrong Offroad. Checking them out now.

Better on and off road. Gain a little in flex and I'm at about 2.5" of lift
