You're probably right, and that's really NUTZ. The gov't just loves those folks.

That must be one hell of a bonus if only "part" of it is being used to cover all that.

Have you considered investing that money into a traditional IRA instead?

I am heartened to see so many here understanding that letting the government use your money interest free for a year is "NUTZ" (to quote a previous poster)--maybe there is hope for our country after all!

My wife and I generally pay $1000 to $1200, accumulated over the year in our account, and have not had a "return" in over 25 years...

While I agree with not letting .gov have free use of MY money for a year it seems my wife and I are getting a return for the first time. Its probably because she didn't work this year, we have a mortgage and a kid. Im going to up my deductions at work so they take less out for 2017 because we are expecting child number two in the coming weeks.

refi'd this year, so my interest deduction is going to be substantially less... i suspect my refund will be fairly minimal. but whatever it is, will go into the checking account and get mixed in with every thing else. i'll continue to pay extra on the mortgage and take a vacation or two. or but a nice watch.. whatever

We usually are within $500 either way (owe or refund) but unless you have consistent W2 income. Tax planning becomes much more difficult when your returns include schedules B, C, D, E, F......

I understand. For the last 18 years, largely due to my wife's financial acumen and diligence in retiring any debt in anticipation of my retirement, we have only had to deal with the short 1040. At this juncture significant inflation is my only fear...

Why can't we fill out a little form that says where we want our tax money to go for the year?
You could do it online and have little sliders or boxes and it has to equal out to 100%... it could be like this:
    27% to National Defense
    22% to Highways/Infrastructure
    20% to CIA "discretionary funds"
    15% to Education
10% to NSA "we're not listening to you *wink wink* funds"
    5% to National Parks
    1% to NAMBLA
It would at least be interesting to see where people place their priorities.

But you would have to underpay by quite a bit to even worry about that.
