I got a great offer from a smaller dealer on my Tacoma. When I take my truck to sell it to them and do paperwork, they will take possession of the vehicle and a check will be mailed to the lein holder. Best advice to be sure that it gets paid off? Certified check or what?

They do it all the time and know what to do.

My advice is to drink a beer.

Unfortunately my best advice is to bring a tube of K-Y jelly with you--at least that way it will not be as painful.

But seriously the best way to ensure the lien is paid off--if and only if the dealer/dealer's bank cannot do an EFT--would be a certified check sent via USPS certified mail with a return receipt requested. Certified mail gets you a receipt when you mail it, indicating that it was accepted by USPS; requesting a return receipt gets you certification from USPS that the letter was indeed delivered, on what date, and who signed for it...

Not paranoid, but maybe guilty of feeling like you need to be overly cautious.

Dealerships buy cars on a daily basis, not all of them are without liens. They know what to do, you don't need to worry about it for a second.

You'll do better selling it yourself by a long shot. Even if you discount it to get rid of it quickly.

As long as dealer is legit and been there for a long time, I wouldn't worry about it.

....^^^... Just make sure that the lean holder is paid and paid on time. . . . . . . . . Watch it closely.

Over the years we have had 2 big dealers (old established dealers too) go out of business and didn't pay the lien holders and it was h*ll on the folks that traded in their vehicles. They had double payments to save their credit until it was solved in court.

Just watch it closely ... especially a smaller dealer.

Really man?..... This is your "joke" to a chick? (OP is female)

I get a five day vacation for telling some millennial (male) whiner to go get some M*d*l and a t*mp*x but this is somehow cool to say to a chick? This site has very interesting (biased) mods. That's a fact.

OP... Watch out for deals that seem to good to be true. They usually are. Not sure what type of dealer you are doing business with, but the smaller buy here, pay here lots are usually corrupt. My $.02

OP ... you can always hand deliver the payoff check to lein holder for the dealer.

    I have done that before.

Not too paranoid. It's a lot of money. I'm wondering why the dealer is mailing a check instead of using EFT, but I've never done a transaction like this so I don't have a frame of reference. Sorry for your troubles, good luck with the exchange.

Sell it outright to a private buyer. You'll make more $$$ and you can dictate the terms. Last car i sold, i sold in the parking lot of my bank during business hours. Had funds verified on his certified check before i handed over the title. You can do the same thing if your buyer is willing to wait for you to receive the title after payoff. You could even do a joint-check made out to you and the finance company to put their mind at ease. Just some options.

    ...^^^... This for sure.

Sold several on Autotrader with excellent results and you have complete control of sale and check to lein holder too :)

Most Sheriff's Depts welcome Craigslist transactions to be conducted on their property so you don't get abducted by some "it puts the lotion on it's skin" weirdo.
