I might be taking a shot in the dark with you NorCal folks on this one, but do any of you guys ice fish around NorCal/Tahoe area? Used to be big into ice fishing when I lived in the Midwest, but it got away from me when I moved out here a few years back. It looks like there are a couple of fish-able lakes around the Tahoe area in the winter, but wanted to hear from anyone on here who actually does it or has done it.

Growing up in MN, ice fishing was huge for me. Haven't done it mich out here. Went a couple times out by Kirkwood at Caples, Kirkwood and Silver Lakes. Pretty much only caught a buzz, but had a good time doing it.

I've heard that Boca and Stampede, near Truckee, are ice-fishing lakes, most years.

Those with RTT. I'm planning to buy one but my money saving feelings are becoming strong. I know I'll use it, I want to get out more just the wife and I on weekend adventures. And then maybe have space to OTPHJ when I hang out with you guys if I don't stop bailing on trips.

How much do you use yours? I figure a few times a year and the spending is justified. I have all the other camping equipment and a normal ground tent. Only reason I haven't been camping recently is because my grandma left me the house in Lake Almanor so we've been just spending as much time up there as we can.

LOL. Thanks for the information. Yeah its crazy going from Iowa to CA. Everyone's uncle and cousin would go out on the ice back there, but here, you tell someone about ice fishing and they look at you in horror before throwing some holy water on your face.

    http://www.abc10.com/news/local/cal...fied-in-fatal-squaw-valley-accident/392116602

Joe Zuiches, a 42-year-old resident of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed Tuesday morning during avalanche control operations.

The incident happened around 8:35 a.m. before he resort had opened to the public at the top of Gold Coast Ridge at Squaw Valley. The cause is believed to be the detonation of an explosive hand charger.

Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows President and CEO Andy Wirth said in a news conference that Zuiches was "the best of the best" at his job and was very experienced.

The explosives device being used for avalanche control in this particular incident was made of ammonium nitrate and is commonly used at ski resorts across the country.

Zuiches is survived by his wife and infant son.

    Awful.

I think its not so much about how many times a year you use it, but the ease of setup, breakdown, space saving, comfortability, warmth, no worries in rain storms having your tent flood, etc. You WILL get your money's worth. You have to think of it not just as a yearly investment because the thing will last you a long while if you take care of it.

It has changed the game for my wife and I. And now with a little guy were looking forward to putting the annex on more and having him down in a pack and play camping this year. There's something about just feeling safer with a RTT/Compound instead of a thin ground tent.

You sound like me when I was debating the purchase, I'm not able to get out as much as others due to work and after over a year and really only using it in Moab I was over it. I got a Coleman instant, the 20 seconds it takes to open that bitch up and drink half a beer is totally worth it. I'm not a RTT hater at all, it was comfy as hell and nice to be off the ground when it was raining in Moab.

I did NOT like having to open up and air out for a full day after a trip, can't always do that if you head to work the next day and that would just give me anxiety that my 2k tent was molding. My wife was to short to help me open it so it was a one man job, totally doable just would be nice not to have to go back and forth, you'll experience this one Sam. Also didn't like the cog change on the bedrack, I imagine it will be even more noticeable on top of a minivan.

I know people will debate these point, but that is the point of this website right?

Definitely things I've considered and the main reason I want one. The wife wants it too but knows it's fairly expensive but if we use it and what we save being off the ground and the 30-40 min set up of our other ground tent would be a life saver on those dark nights when arriving to camp. I'll be buying a prinsu rack as well to accommodate my big ass on the roof and since I'll be getting a larger sized tent I want it for strength.

Sounds like my original idea of getting is is valid. Just waiting on my bonus to spend some money and know I can spend it elsewhere as well and trying to justify in my mind. Adulting sucks.

this is also a concern for me, the COG issue. Its already "tippy" in corners and whatnot. Now im going to throw ~200lbs up there to add to it.

The wife doesnt help with the normal tent now because she doesnt do it right and i get agitated (hard to believe, i know). but she would definitely be out of the running for this one because shes so short. I havent had to open my ground tent after camping unless it rained or got some condensation like the last trip. I had to set it up in the parents backyard for two days to dry fully.

Definitely some things to think about.
