I've been using synthetic oil long enough with enough UOAs from Blackstone to know that 10k intervals are perfectly safe.

So I hear people prefer the synthetic Mobil 1, anyone buy oil and filter from toyota?? A while back some people bought the filters in bulk online. Also where is everyone buying that tool to remove the filter??

I have used mobil1 in my wife's car, alternating with RPO due to whichever is on sale/available, and never had an issue. On ebay I found a 10 pack of oem filters for the tacoma for about $40 shipped.

If you drive 10,000 miles in 12 months I could see doing that. But it would take me 3 to 4 years to drive that many miles. That would be 3 cold winters and 3 hot summers here in Illinois. My oil would go though several extremes. Guess that is why the dealer changes mine once a year. I had 3,888 miles on my first year oil change.

I've got 5k on my truck and only had it 4 months so mileage based intervals are appropriate.

I did mine myself around 4,200 miles, oil and oil filter. I know a lot of people have different views on this. But for spending $37k I don't think it hurts to spend 55 bucks to change your oil/filter and a half hour of your time to be safe. At 10k they will be doing it for free and thereafter.

    See my post:
Price difference vs Mobil1 wasn't enough to bother diving into the cesspool of one my local Walmarts vs the closer and more convenient dealer parts counter. Plus the cost of the filter from the dealer was low enough not to be concerned with trying to buy in bulk. Next two oil changes will be on the dealer's dime anyway, and past that I'll typically end up doing one change per year. Saving a buck a filter isn't worth having to remember where the heck I stored them.

I bought the filter housing tool from Amazon.

Yes, time trumps mileage. 10k or 12 months for this truck. My funcar is 15k or 12 months. Even when it was my primary / daily driver I never hit the mileage OCI before hitting 12 months.

My first oil change will be performed at 10k miles. Why? Because that's what the manual calls for.

I have way too many engine powered things in my life that require constant maintenance....basically I'm up to my neck in oil changes and the Tacoma is far from the top of the list to worry about.

Besides, it is only a $35,000 to $40,000 Truck. Who would worry about such a thing..

I just changed the first time at 2300km (1429m). Oil and filter. Was going to do just filter but what the heck. 10,000M = 16,000km.

I am tempted to do filter changes every 8,000 km.

By the time it'd likely make any difference (in a statistically meaningful way) it'll be a $2500 truck. :D

I change mine every 5k, but I live 2.5 miles from work so I believe I fall under "severe duty"

    What page?

10k here unless I meet the severe driving requirements. Engine Oil is a lot more sophisticated than the conventional oils of decades ago. That said it can last a lot longer than 10,000 miles or a year. The older my vehicles get the lazier I tend to get with oil changes and I havenet seen any adverse effects from it, My old truck I hadn't changed the oil in years. I just dropped the pan out of my Jeep to replace the rear main seal, engine is super clean for 30 years old..and it went as long as 3 years without an oil change.

I certinaly don't recommend anyone wait that long and I'll follow what Toyota recommends for the near future. However the small amount of shavings you may find in your oil after 1000 miles or so is negligible in long term impact. this is a truck not a nuclear powered submarine.

I recommend following the maintenance guide. Nothing wrong with changing your oil early, I just don't anymore as I haven't seen much difference.

Page 158. While not as stringent as I've seen on vehicles in past decades, IMHO it still qualifies as a "break in period".

If you are going to do something different than what the manufacturer recommends, I would suggest having your oil tested to prove that you are doing the right thing. 5,000 mile oil changes just because pappy did it, you "feel" better about it, or you just love your truck and want to take care of it, deserves testing to verify you are correct. Testing could prove if you are appropriately directing your time, effort, and money on oil changes or if you should do "something else" to take care of your truck.

I haven't bothered, I just change it every 10K or 12 months like the manufacturer says. They've tested the dog snot out of it and have a pretty good idea how many miles joe blow (who doesn't really even care) can drive between oil changes.

Don't be ridiculous. You quoted me out of context.

I will be following the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule.

I always do my first oil change on new vehicles in the first 1000-1500 Miles, I like to get the metal shavings out.
