I called Mobil 1 tech lin about this. We use it in all of our vehicles, but NONE of them see 10,000 miles a year. My rule, loke the old 3 month 3000 mile for conventional ool, has been every year or 10,000 miles for synthetic. Imagine how happy I was when Mobile 1 confirmed I was absolutely correct.

Speaking of that, waiting for it to go one sale at CostCo so I can do my yearly oil changes.

Be sure to use Castrol Syntec so you can line BP's pockets. You know, after they spent all that money on Deepwater Horizon...

I would agree if you were talking about INCREASING the oil change intervals. But if someone chooses to increase the frequency of oil / filter changes it can't hurt anything other than their wallet. Piece of mind.

If you disagree then do as you wish and follow the mfg recommended intervals. But to suggest that everyone who chooses to do otherwise should do oil testing makes me ask why? To find it their oil is still in great shape? That is kinda the intent. Why wait until the oil is losing performance and the filter is getting plugged? Let's wait until our tires are bald and we skid off the road or our brakes won't stop the car until we change them.

I am not happy with the length of the factory oil change intervals. I look at it this way. We have superior oils today especially when you consider synthetics. BUT if we rely on the extended intervals as an equalizer to how much wear in a certain number of miles we are gaining nothing other than possibly saving a buck on changes. Now if we use that superior oil to reduce wear by changing it at the old intervals we are getting much better protection and much longer life of the engine. So what do you want out of your truck? Do you flip it after 4-5 years or do you keep it until the wheels fall off? That will determine if you should go with standard factory intervals or if you might consider increasing your change intervals.

For me it comes down to making the decision based on actual evidence instead of emotion.

$50 in supplies plus time and trouble to recycle the used oil an extra ten or twenty times vs. a $28 fee for a test to validate the factory interval.

Just curious, why a 5,000 mile interval instead of the classic 3,000 mile interval? What's the reasoning for going nearly double the mileage?

The oil and engine manufacturers say the oil can go 10 K, but despite the much better additives and synthetic base I keep seeing the experts say there is no way they would trust oil to last that long. Amsoil has a 25K interval IIRC. I just can't see wasting the time and money to change the oil every two months. Why test the oil at 3 or 5k when the experts has said it is good for twice that long?

Do what you want but my other vehicles has a sensor based on usage that gauges the life left. It goes way longer than 10k before saying it needs a change.

If I ever buy a new vehicle, I will change the oil at 1,000 miles. After that, the oil will be changed at the manufacturer's recommended intervals. I'll do this even if I don't plan to keep the vehicle forever. To me, it's just the right thing to do.

Were you in the board room and meetings when the engineers were writing the manual? The motor is probably filled with a special break in blend from factory. If the manual says to change it at 10k for break in then I would do that or near 10k. This post reminds me of a guy who was selling a beautiful 1997 Supra RSP 6-speed on eBay. He said he "changes engine oil every 250 miles". What a moron , oil needs time to work and he is harming his engine doing that.

I don't put a lot of miles on my truck compared to others. I will keep changing mine every 6 months reguardless of the miles. My first change, I hade 2865 miles on her, at the 12 month the dealer will change, I'll have maybe 5k miles on her. If I waited to change every 10k miles, I probably would only change oil every 2 years. For me, that is too long.

I plan on keeping this truck for a long, long time so to me, I would rather spend the extra money on oil changes. Being a part time mechanic, I see what can happen to an engine by not taking care of them. I also see what happens when you do take care of them. Peace of mind for me.

Considering that the factory interval is the earlier of 10,000 miles or 12 months, your assessment is quite correct. :)

My funcar is 15,000 miles or 12 months and it always hits the time interval first.

They do not use break in oil any longer and the idiot changing his oil every 250 miles is not harming anything other than his wallet.

Only if you go by the Japanese lunar calendar.
Except break-in is completed at 1k according to the owner's manual...

Yeah, because nothing is more harmful to an internal combustion engine than clean, fresh oil.
