For range shooting an AR which is better to shoot steel or brass casings?

For any type of shooting hands down brass when its fired it temporarily "welds its self to the chamber so the case and chamber take the pressure and then it releases once the pressure drops (this is why brass plate is used in weld backing to fill holes. Steel does not do this and will actually scratch the chamber. I do not/will not run steel in any of mine, even if it got cheaper then reloading. Nickle cases are ok too but it will flake after a while of reloading

Shooting steel is fine for the range (if they allow it). You'll save enough over the long run to afford a barrel replacement

Gotcha! Brass it is then, one of my roommates says he'll just buy a new barrel using the cash he saved buying steel
