I dont trust my dog in the back of my truck still.

 

hmm always worried about tying him up in there. Figured his happy ass would jump still.

 

Once it gets nicer ill give that a try.

Hes stupid smart actually, but also a bit of an idiot. He can't stand to be away from me. He will go run if we are out in a field or dog park but gets about 100yds max and is bolting back to me.

He fell out of the truck window as a pup so he is hesitant to even stick his head that far out the window still.

 

Dusty is similar. He loves to say hi but still comes when i say. Unless its a dog, then it usually takes a hollar or two. He is so timid with dogs but as soon as he warms up all he wants to do is wrestle.

Satchamo can be scary sometimes but he never gets out too far. They both ride leash free....hell we haven't used a leash on them in anywhere in...years.

 

Well I'll give it a try. Maybe just around the block a few times for now and get him slowly used to it. He isn't super big still, so he probaly can't even see out of the bed of my truck without standing up on the rails.

 

You don't want him to do that. Thats a bad habit and dangerous, the wheel wells are find but the bed rails they can fall out of there

 

Lol yea you were way to nice to her as a pup haha she never knew you where the boss.

 

Try caring treats with you. Something like chicken. When you call her anytime or say come just give the treat right away. Eventually she will accociate it with being rewarded and good.


Ya Dusty is about 43 lbs now, well probably 40lb since he just got all his hair cut off.

 

Lol thanks, I was pretty hesitant cause he is part poodle. But hes a pretty cute fur-ball. Gotta say though, between the Aussie, and the poodle, hes a smart lil shit. Figured out how to open the cat door on his doggy gate and sneaks out of it so i had to zip tie it.

 

@m3bassman get a 30 - 50ft check cord. Hook it to her and just let it drag. When you need her to come, give the command, if she doesn't come pick up the cord and pull her in and reward her. If she runs away just firmly plant your foot on the cord and she will come to a stop. When ever you say "come" make sure you force her to come in.

30ft is easy to manage and a great length if you dog stays reasonably close. 50ft gets a bit crazy but might be needed if she likes to take off.

 

^^ I remember you telling me the same thing and I had a 30ft ready to order but I just started working with him whenever we went somewhere to stay by me and its held decently well. Only when he is with lots of people or dogs and is overly excited does he not listen.

 

Lol yeah, don't try a 30ft check cord around a bunch of dogs and people . It's great for Outdoor activities like hiking and fishing. Just let it drag while hiking or tie em off to a tree when fishing.

 

Now that i think of it, i used to kind of do that with my old family dog. We would put a short leash on him and let him run around outside and he wouldn't take off and would come when called. He thought he was on a leash so it never occured he could bolt lol.

 

Going to take a lot of work now to make it happen with her age.

 

Think the check cord would work for training them to stay closer when off leash? Our 2yr old mix recalls pretty well but generally runs way further ahead of us then I'd like. Been struggling to get him to stay within 50ft or so. Can call him back every 3 seconds, but that gets old.

Nah, as long as he keeps up with it and doesn't make it a negative experience.

Yep, that's one of the many uses. Bird hunters use it to train their dogs to keep a certain distance ahead of them. Just leave it on the ground and when they start to go to far say stop and step on it. If they decide to go farther it doesn't take much work to catch up and grab the lead.

A check cord is one of the best things I have for Ash. Bout the only thing it doesn't fix is his dislike for other large dogs near or around his things.
