Just got back from Walmart with oil and stopped by Toyota dealer to grab a filter just for peace of mind. I will be doing my first oil change at 7k just for peace of mind

Awesome I like evidence. Now I look at evidence and see what it shows me.
    https://youtu.be/tYkg0oDUXs8

So I look at this description of synthetic and think WOW this is great stuff. I can understand the basic structure will stay stable in terms of viscosity for insane amounts of time like 10k miles / 16k kilometers. But I look at the used synthetic and wow it has a lot of carbon in it. You know carbon that abrasive that accumulates in your oil as a byproduct of combustion. Also oils tend to turn acidic when used. I will be upfront and say I don't know what it is that turns it acidic or if it is a characteristic of petroleum base stock or if applies to synthetic as well. Without evidence one way or another I will assume (yes that dirty little word) it CAN be as bad until I have evidence to the contrary. That is why you ALWAYS change your oil before your store any vehicle for extended periods. It reduces the chances for acids to be contact with all of those metal bits, bearings and the such for long periods. Now in those extended oil change intervals the oil may still be in good shape chemically (viscosity, lubrication index, etc) but what about all of those contaminants? What about the filter? Does the filter system have a bypass? If when clogged it goes over a bypass valve and doesn't actually get filtered then what? All of those dirty contaminants just circulate without any filtration. Good as in your engine doesn't starve for oil but bad because NO MORE FILTRATION. (I am not aware of the exact system that the Tacoma has but it is generally accepted that bypass is the lesser of two evils: oil starvation vs unfiltered oil).

I won't claim I know EVERYTHING about oil. I don't know everything about intervals. But I do know how to logically assess the information I do have and I do listen when I hear a solid theory. That is why I removed all of that small and microscopic metal that has broken off and is circulating in your oil during break-in. That is why I did a filter change at such an early point. I did the oil as well because it was easy enough to do. Why not? Break-in causes more wear that ANY other time in your engines life short of catastrophic failure.

So my oil change interval views are based more on filtration than the oil. Acids aren't removed by filtration. Carbon is still present in used synthetic oil. Lengthening intervals may be acceptable for the base stock / additives but we aren't addressing filtration. If there were advanced filtration to go along with these advanced synthetics I would be more easily convinced. The oil and filtration intervals can't logically be the same when improvements only exist for one of the two components of an oil and filter change. Prove an increased micron filtration system with increased capacity to contain captured contaminants over the lengthened interval and I may come on board but that evidence hasn't been presented in this thread yet.

Any emotion in my explanation? Enough facts / logic to back up my opinion? I am not saying my opinion is for everyone. But my logic works for me and my wallet stands behind it. You make your own decision based on logic that works for you.

At the risk of sounding facetious, you take off the old filter and replace it with a new one...

    Whole bunch of shit! $$$
Exactly why I'll be changing mine (filter) every 5k miles.
My Honda Civic EXT calls for filter only changes , I just as easily change the oil also..

Have you done this on a third gen? If not, please have a look at the filter cartridge housing location and let me know if your answer stays the same.

... and this is why folks recommend having your actual oil from your vehicle driven under your usual conditions tested mid-interval by a well known reputable company such as Blackstone. They'll tell you what's in there. Whether the additive packages are holding up. Whether it has more contaminants than it should, etc. etc. etc.

Costs $28 and you find out what's actually there and whether you're correct to change early or whether you're throwing your money away.

THAT is the evidence I'm talking about. You're not going to find that info on Youtube.

BTW, good video for folks not familiar with the topic. Thanks for posting. I noted that at 4:58 he states "You should certainly always go with what your car manufacturer recommends..." which in this case is the earlier of 10,000 miles or 12 months. I don't believe anyone here is advocating longer OCI's than recommended.

I'd imagine the most commonly used brand is Toyota as that's what the dealers are likely to be using.

I like the Penzoil Ultra. It is pricey, but I look for discounts and buy ahead of time.

Thanks, do you change your oil at 10,000 miles as a dealer recommends ? I have always changed my oil at 5,000 thought about extending to 7,500 miles ?

Fun fact: the back label of the Toyota branded 0W20 synthetic mentions it's marketed by Toyota for ExxonMobil.

@gpb: I'm as confused as you are on this one... But here's how I'm imagining it would go.

    Step 1: Remove oil filter.
Step 2: Allow all of the gooey stuff to run out of the engine. (This may take a little while, have a juicebox)
Step 3: Replace oil filter with a new one.
Step 4: Pour about 5 1/2 quarts of oil into your engine to replace what came out.
    ALL DONE.

Oh.... wait..... that's an oil change.

    @natural_nativ LOL, nice. :D

I suppose the alternative might be to either hire The Flash for the job, or perhaps just flip the truck over before beginning.
