Driveshaft binding?

Not to start bashing the Tacoma, but...

Anyone have any trouble with their driveshaft binding?

Back story: At the 5k mile service, I had them check the truck out for a harsh downshift, a weird stumble when in steady state cruise around 50 to 60 MPH. Of course no problem found, but they did do the refresh.

400 miles later, I had what felt like a wheel lockup around 5 MPH under light braking. Went to dealer and they could not replicate. They made an appointment for today, so there FTS could look at it.

The only issue he could replicate was the harsh downshift. Trans fluid was checked, and found ok. So far they seem to think it's the driveshaft binding due to bad angle?

To me, that sounds unusual. The truck isn't lifted at all. I would think a binding driveshaft would affect mpg, but I can still regularly get 22 mpg or so.

Not that I can tell. When cruising between 50 and 60 MPH there is a stumble of sorts. It's the same feeling like when you first take off when pulling a trailer. Like there is slack somewhere, except it'll do it multiple times in a row. Where I live, it's mostly flat and rural. 8 miles to the next town, and I can feel it doing it most of the way.

Torque the leaf spring U-bolts to 75+ ft-lb to reduce axle wrap.

Grease the driveshaft U-joints if they come with zerk fittings.

My rig is currently in the shop. Was having shift issues (slipping, lag, hard shifts, searching for gears over 50mph), and a slight vibration. Took it in yesterday for 5k check, ask them to check tranny fluid which ended up a liter short.. still had issues. Brought it back today, and they said it was a bent driveshaft...

The stumble is an issue with the tune. (ECU)

The harsh downshift is also a tune related problem (TCU)

These shouldn't be related to your driveshaft.

I have the same exact problems. I've complained at my 5k, 10k and just yesterday at my 15k service appointment.

Of course they can't duplicate the problem and tell me it's "operating as designed". But at least this time they tightened the U-bolts, greased the U-joints, checked brakes and "checked the driveshaft", whatever that means. There is nothing normal about the downshift/clunk I get when coming to a stop.

At my 20k service, I'll complain again and perhaps push them for whatever TSB's are out there.

And I will continue to own it for another 2 to 3 years. Get used to it buttercup! Once I get some miles and use out of it, I'll dump it for something better.
