Before the body shop begins working on your truck, ask them which clear coat they will be using. I had my door repainted and it developed a haze and had orange peel like crazy. I ended up having the door redone three times. On the third attempt, they used a different clearcoat. The body shop I use has been working in the industry for over 30 years and it's the first time they had ever seen something like this. Not saying it'll happen to you, but just keep an eye out.

Edit: Don't know what I'm talking about...

    Just to clear this up:

    Lacquer is not Clearcoat.

Lacquer doesn't have the same characteristics of Clearcoat.

I don't think bed is damaged at all. Bed is still aligned and tail gate works properly. I think the bumper may have scrapped bedside.

The body shop referred to it as "water based clear". I took it as acrylic lacquer clearcoat was what they were using. It matched the description of what they said.

Water based clear isn't lacquer, far from it. Like sucra said up above, lacquer has been around for ages, Henry Ford painted Model ts with it.

Urethane enamel and water based automotive paint came along much later.

It appeared to me in the above photo the bumper pushed in the bed on the driver's side?? Sorry if that's not the case.

However if the bed is damaged, repairing the bed is most likely cheaper than replacement. I'm assuming the new bed would not come pre-painted so that's a lot more material and labor if replacing the entire thing. From my experience Insurance companies seem to always like to take the cheapest route when it comes to paying for repairs and thus why I would think IF the bed is damaged, they'll repair over replacing.

OP just needs to watch out for orange peel and haze. I'm not a paint guy by any means :anonymous:

There may be some. It appears the bumper was pushed towards the drivers side and forward. I don't think its anything that can't be repaired.

I am detail guy. Have brought flashlights with me to inspect body work before. It will go to a reputable shop.

Does anyone know if it is worth asking about diminished value? I have little knowledge about diminished value.

Here in TN they don't honor it. I'm not sure about Kentucky, but I wouldn't get my hopes up. You have to put up a fight normally to even get a small sum. It wouldn't hurt to ask though.

I went ahead and asked. The other driver has insurance through Progressive. So will see what happens.

    Ahhh im a detail hu

The bed, as in the entire part of the body behind the cab. On an older truck I had to have the entire thing including tail gate tail lamps etc replaced bc of a guy who rear-ended me. He sheared the bolts that hold the bed in place to frame completely off.

I'm referring to the picture the OP shared that shows the bumper which appears pushed into body. That "fender" can't be replaced, it's part of the rest of the "bed". IMHO that area of damage could be repaired and wouldn't warrant replacing.

OP will be in good hands knowing he's a detail guy and taking it to a reputable shop. He can hold them to a high standard to ensure his truck looks like it never happened.
