Hard to say for sure, but I'd be willing to bet something would blow up if you tried activating it at 50-60. But like BVCOTaco said, mine is wired through my ARB compressor. If the compressor swtich is off, then the locker switch won't do anything.

If you are running a non ARB compressor, I'm not sure if this still applies or not...

So, my 09 tacoma has a locking rear differential while in 4x4?

If it is an OFF ROAD TRD, yes, but it would also have A-TRAC which is traction on all 4 wheels, not just the back... and one spinning tire in front.

I know that approximately 80% of aftermarket locked tacomas, owners choose ARB because it serves a dual purpose with the air compressor to inflate wheels after wheeling. But what about a mechanical OX locker? or does it just come down to owner preference?

Gotcha. Do any tacomas come with locking front differentials in addition to the locking rear differential? Or are you basically only getting power to three wheels essentially?

No factory front locker... but A-TRAC is on all 4 tires and it does not cause steering difficulty that lockers do.

    so yes and possibly no.

I had my ARB installed by a tech in WA that came from the ARB plant that installed for them (very knowledgeable and experienced ARB rep). he told me that if the locker were engaged on the road at 55-60 mph, as long as the two tires are traveling the same speed there will be no issues due to all the spider gears and what have you, spinning all at the same speed; the locking gear is still spinning with the wheels, the clutch just has not pushed the lock ring down to engage the gear that locks the two axles together (if any of that makes sense haha)

me personally, I would NEVER engage it going that fast or even moving at all if I could avoid it. to me, the common sense method of thinking tells me that engaging a mechanisms at high speeds is a recipe for gears to shear and grenade, destroying whatever is around them. I know the ARB rep said you COULD, but you also gotta ask yourself the SHOULD part.

    hope that helps a little

Gotcha. And A-TRAC is a TRD OR feature only, right? I've got a 2009 TRD Sport with 4x4 but I don't have an A-TRAC button on my dashboard. I think the only button I have turns traction control off. I'm just trying to figure out exactly what features my truck is equipped with. Thanks for all your help so far.

Only the OFF ROAD has A-TRAC (2009+) and the REAR LOCKING DIFFERENTIAL.
The SPORT shares the same drive modes as all other (non TRD OFF ROAD) Tacomas.
The VSC OFF button you have has three drive selections in 2WD and two in 4WD (2009-2011):
    1) Normal: TRAC ON a limited slip system with engine regulation and braking of a spinning wheel.
    2) AUTO LSD (quick push of button): Limited slip but without regulating the engine output.
    3) VSC OFF (stop truck, hold in button for 3+ seconds): Turns off both TRAC and VSC, for no controls.
In 4WD High, your 'Normal' is called TRAC but it is the same as AUTO LSD as it doesn't have regulation.
This changed in 2012, and was renamed TRAC OFF and required a button push.

Yes it does. And if you are looking to upgrade to an ARB for a front Differential Locker, do it. I have had one on mine for over 150,000 miles and never had an issue. If you are worried about difficulty steering while the locker is engaged, turn it off. It will disengage. Don't listen to the A-Trac gods that try and tell you A-Trac is just as good as a locker. Its not.

No, it doesn't. Unless his sig is wrong, which says he has a SPORT TRD! Grey 2009 Tacoma DCLB SR5 V6 TRD Sport.
You need to learn about the OFF ROAD REAR LOCKER and A-TRAC a bit more, perhaps?

Pretty sure @David K is right. I do indeed have a 2009 TRD Sport.

Only the Off Road TRD has a locking differential, 2WD or 4WD.

My mistake. I was under the impression that he had an TRD OR.

Relax David K. I just bought a Brand new 2017 4runner TRD Offroad. I already miss the front locker in my Tacoma. For the record, A-Trac sucks. I had to witness it for myself. Upgrade time.

Sucks? What other factory stock feature from Toyota does more?
I had two Off Road 4x4s before this one, and this one with A-TRAC far outshines those without A-TRAC. It is amazing that you get the traction of front and rear lockers but none of the the steering problems of locked axles.
