Bed rails attachments.

Yassssssss!!!! Thanks to Tacoma World and this thread I now have super awesome 40mm ammo boxes mounted on my bed rails!

 

O yea! That looks nice! Where did you get the boxes? They look like nice boxes.

 

I picked them up from a Jeep parts site called Quadratec. They have brand new ones (remakes of the original military style) they even have lock hasps built in on them already! They were $29 each and you can get them in the original olive drab color or black. They even have free shipping on orders over $50, which was a huge plus, since most places online charged more for shipping on a used can of unknown condition than just buying shiny new ones!

Yes, this was my solution to losing my rear seat storage once I installed a 2nd car seat for the new arrival. I didn't want to sacrifice my bed space with a typical truck bed tool box, and only needed a small amount of space for some tow straps, shackles, hitch receivers/balls, jumper cables and small emergency air compressor. This seems to be a great option. Again, I wouldn't have been able to come up with this without this great site for the inspiration and guidance!

 

What did you use to hold your fire extinguisher? I would love to have one in my truck.

Your such a bad influence. So I broke down and bought a pair myself. These things a heavier and bigger than I though. Just have a quick question though @Gregthespy. Are you using any kind of spacer between the rail and the box? Thanks for recommending these.

I'm the CAD designer/programmer at a sheet metal shop so the following breakdown of components are slightly custom. I used a 3/8" thick aluminum washer at 1.25" in diameter to offset the box to avoid the stiffening rib that's welded onto the sides of the box.
I also made my own rail nut out of 1/4" stainless steel tapped for a 5/16-18 threaded knob. One of the things I noticed is that if your spacer is any larger than 1.25" it will interfere with the lid overhang when the lid is on. I also found after a little use that the boxes lifted off of the fender hump when I tightend them to the rail, I didn't like that so I added a threaded insert to the bottom of the box and ran another threaded knob into it from the underside of the fender we'll. I'm sure you could simply use a nut and bolt, but I had the technology available to put a threaded insert in, so I did.
I lastly, put a thin rubber washer under the washer inside of the box to help stop any water that may make its way across the threads of the bolts that hold it to the bed rail. Below are some pics of the items for a better look.
Glad I'm an inspiration (or bad influence!). So far I'm loving these boxes, the only thing I've done since installing them is to add some large heat shrink around my combination locks to avoid the swinging locks from wearing into the boxes finish.

I used the tapped T nuts from Amazon (under $3 each) and some knob from Lowe's (under $4 each) so everything can move/uninstall quickly if I need my full bed. This setup has worked really well for me so far.

I could make some laser cut strips of aluminum or steel that had holes for pressing in PEM nuts. Then you could cut the strips to whatever length you needed/ press in the PEM nuts to only the holes needed. Maybe ya'll just want a supplied kit?

 

I'm all set now. But a kit would be awesome. I bought the T nuts online then went to the hardware for the bolts. A kit with varies sized bolts would rock.

 

Just ordered the t-nuts for a tool mounting project. Are the quick fist the best option for mounting a shove and ax?

That's what I use! I have only had my shovel fall out of the mount (1 of the 2) once, and I think it was user error of not tightening it.

 

I used @RelentlessFab hi-lift mounts to hold a 60" hi-lift with a daystar handle isolator and a @Shmellmopwho slider adapter (cut to 55" to fit under my low-profile tonneau cover) and dual quick-fist mounts to mount a 40" shovel and 26" axe. I also mounted a hi-lift base to the front bed rail with 1/2" carriage bolts. I painted the tools to match my blazing blue pearl truck because I'm a crazy person..
