How's the fishery treating you?
Debating on buying one. But part of me wants to save for the 16-35mm f/4 is instead. Even if it's a 10th of the cost.

 

Very amateur, just started photography about 6 months ago. Still have a lot to learn!

Hmmm... Never found that myself. Would seem professional landscape photographers should take up gambling if it were true. I've found it more like 90% photographer and 10% luck. If you know what you are doing you'll be in the right place at the right time and adjust your plan based on conditions and experience. As they say, luck favors the prepared.

Anyway I suppose you are being humble, which is nice, but it is a bit disingenuous to new landscape photographers who will never improve if they think they just need to get lucky. It is sort of like telling a photojournalist they just need to be more lucky.

For example, the shot below wasn't lucky at all. I was about fifty miles away from this spot about two hours before sunset when I saw a bit of cirrus on the extreme western horizon. I knew from experience that those clouds would arrive over Badwater at about sunset and that would create a unique pink sidelight/blue fill light at twilight that makes the salt come alive with contrasting color so I changed my plans and hot tailed it to this location. I also knew to spend time searching the flats for a particularly large set of polygons to use in the foreground because if I did that I could use a high camera position to create forced perspective that would emphasize the extent of the flats (it doesn't look like it but the camera was seven feet off the playa for this shot):

This shot again based on observing the cloud conditions and then choosing a pre-scouted location that would make best use of the light (this shot taken miles from the dunes at a 1000mm FF equivalent focal length):

The shot below was scouted via Google Earth before I even made the trip. I also knew it was a composition that would not include much sky and did not require clouds. Clear sky deep evening twilight was all that was required so I knew to drive and hike to this location when those conditions would be present:

Did an F-18 just happen to fly low through a canyon as I took the shot below? Or did I know from experience that they fly down this canyon. Furthermore maybe I realized they only do it in mid-day harsh lighting and developed a composition ahead of time that could deal with that kind of lighting. Understanding the light, the location, pre-visualization of a composition and developing a novel technique to capture a high resolution landscape with a jet you have no control over were all necessary not to mention about six hours on site for the pieces to come together. I could have gotten "unlucky" and not had a jet fly low enough that day, but on the other hand I knew if one didn't that day it likely would tomorrow as long as I was ready to take advantage of a low flight path.

For the shot below did I just happen to be wandering around a remote and inaccessible ridge line right as the sun crossed the horizon putting raking light across Racetrack Valley? Or maybe knowing a bit about composition, lighting and the area I put myself there at that time on purpose...

Anywho, landscape photographers are certainly dependent on location and conditions. That said experience and knowledge go a very long way to making sure you make the most of any location or conditions. Certainly there are occasions in which "magic unfolds" outside your plans and expectations, but those are pretty rare events and you'll end up with a tiny portfolio if you expect to get lucky with such on a regular basis. Knowledge and experience let you stack the deck so you "get lucky" more often, so much so it is hard to call it "luck" and if it were a casino you'd have been kicked out by the pit boss long ago...

 

I shoot micro-four-thirds cameras. GM1 for lightweight day time hiking and E-M5II for more "serious" landscape photography at twilight. I wouldn't normally have shot pictures of my truck, but since I started a build thread I have shot quite a few! Been trying to do more "environmental portraiture" of the truck where the truck doesn't necessarily dominate the shot and is just a part of the landscape too.

I am hoping to get out to some more of these canyons he's documented this year, I've been out to Sunlight Bridge canyon and Crescent Bridge Canyon, both amazing, especially Sunlight Bridge in the afternoon, it lights up is florescent hues when the sun hits it right.

Steve Hall's site is amazing. Great complement to Digonnet's books (which if you don't have you need to get). I'm flabbergasted by how much he gets done in his few trips a year. Real inspiration!

Can't keep up with him myself. I already have so many "to-do" hikes from his site and Digonnet's books and then Steve goes and finds more cool places. I'll be in the Owlsheads in about a week doing a couple of hikes there. Not any of the canyons though - don't feel like wading across the Amargosa which appears to be flowing pretty good right now! Going to do Lost Lake and Owlshead BM plus some shorter mining site explorations. Only have a few days out there this time.
