First of all I am a Tacoma guy to the core. I picked up my new 3rd gen a week ago. I am really trying to live the thing. To me it looks good, feels good, and I have have always wanted at trd OR. I unfortunately could only get the 4x2. Anwho I have been on this site constantly since bringing it home. Should have been on It before I bought it. It's like everyday I drive it I notice something not right. Nothing serious I guess. But for spending 34k I expected a little better of a experience.

    Issues I am having

Speedometer makes like a tick motion when climbing or declining. Kinda like a watch.

Rear diff lock takes forever to engage. I have to reverse and move forward quite a few times just for it to engage and disengage.

Yesterday it was cold. And I started the truck before I left work for about 7min. Got in and put it in drive and the RPMs jumped and the truck lunged forward.

Like I said I am all tacoma. Had 1 in every gen. But I'm wondering. Did I make the right choice? I'm not trying to bash the 3rd gen but I bought it with the hopes of putting a ton of miles on it and keeping it for a loooooong time. I guess I'm just looking for some encouraging words or some advice. Truck now has 500 miles on it.

TW should be required reading beforehand, for anyone considering a 3rd gen. Much less regrets later.

What do you mean you unfortunately could only get a 4x2? Did you want a 4x4? For 34k you could have easily gotten a 4x4.

The e-locker is normal, sometimes you got to go forward and backward a bit to get it to engage.

I don't typically look at the speedometer rise and fall but not being completely smooth is probably normal. If it really does tick like a watch with that much lag through the entire range, post a video here.

I cant comment on the lunging forward with RPMs increasing. I know the RPMs increasing is normal when stepping on the brake when stopped, turning the wheel, AC cycling, etc. But I have a manual transmission so there's no possible way for the truck to lunge forward on its own when I'm stopped.

    I mean
yes out the door. Not sure I understand what your asking about the dif. being super super low. I don't "off road" per say. I do hunt and go down some tra where the lock will definitely benefit.

Honestly, every Tacoma I've owned has had some minor nuance. Honestly OP the best advice is to try not to focus on the silly little things and enjoy your new truck. The diff lock is normal. The lunge can be fixed with the TSB update.

If it does tick you might want to have it checked.

You've got to put about 2,000 miles on it to "break it in". I wouldn't get any updates until after that. I'm pretty much repeating the things I've read on TW. Someone correct me if this is wrong.

The lunge shouldn't happen, I wouldn't wait, sounds like his transmission never got the update from the factory. My 16 had the lunge and delayed reverse to drive, TSB fixed it. My 17 from new never had it. I do agree there is a bit of a break in period, transmission learns your driving habits, etc.

I read about all the updates. My truck was manufactured of 11/16. So I figured it had the update. I guess I could be wrong.

That lunge is classic of prior to update, had it in my 16. Like I said my updated 16 with the TSB and my 17 don't have it.

Sort of. Its a long story but in a nutshell I bought a 16 in May, my 16 had 2 diffs replaced and some other small things, after the 2nd replacement I wasn't happy with Toyota, case manager presented me with option to trade towards a 17 (worked a deal for me with dealer) after I suggested lemon law. So basically a free upgrade minus a few payments.

First one was the rear diff howl everyone talks about and what the tech said as some not normal shavings/fluid. Second one was the howl again and could only guess same issue. So far my 17 has been good but I only have 2k miles on it, my howl developed around 4k on my 16.

Good thing is you bought it new and the dealer has to take care of those things - frustrating for sure. Hope they hook you up with a loaner whenever it's in for repairs. Good thing is it'll probably go really well after the little bugs are sorted out.

Has the 17 been better overall than the 16 was?
