I did read this bugs on here times about the 16's awhile. That's why I waited for the 17. But I am happy with the truck. Maybe I'm just nit picken. I find myself reading issue threads and driving with the radio down just listening. Haha

None of the issues my 16 had and the build/fit and finish is way better. My 16 had plastic interior pieces separating, etc. along with the other stuff. I think people tend to over analyze a lot of things here and forget that not even the 2nd gen was perfect. They all had some "bugs" but overall solid trucks with reliability, dependability and good value/resale. The 3rd gen is no different. I can understand the frustration with the powertrain choice, etc. but a lot of it is silly complaints. Yes some have had some issues, but Toyota seems to be addressing them more than fairly through customer service. I will say 99% of people probably wouldn't notice anything with their new trucks if they didn't read about it here first.

Do yourself a favor, don't man. My problem is the mods. Im trying to pay off debt and get in a good place and TW is like meth when it comes to trying to stay debt free.

Sorry to hear about your troubles man. As far as the diff lock goes, you do have to be patient with it at first, but the more you engage it, the easier it gets.

Is there any way to check the rear diff oil/lube level? Why do I get the feeling this might be causing problems in new cars and not checked by dealers?

Not without draining and refilling, which I was told not to do by Toyota case manager. Some have reported no hum after moving to a non Toyota fluid like royal purple, amsoil, etc. There's been lots of theories from low fluid to gear tolerance ever so slightly out of spec to just a natural harmonic hum due to design. Toyota as of now has no solution or idea or keeping very silent about it.

I think he was just asking if it was possible to check the Fluid level in case it was low, not about swapping out the fluid.

You do not have to drain and refill it, all you have to do is pull the "Fill Plug" and check with your finger.

Sometimes its hard to tell if people are joking or being serious on the Computer, but that is exactly how you check the fluid levels in Diffs, Transfer Cases, Manual Transmissions, ect.

The reason I'm thinking about the diff fluid/oil level is that there is a thread about checking the lube zerts under 4x4 trucks because these things are rolling off dealership lots not fully lubed apparently. Some people report having to use their own grease guns and pumping 5-15 or so squirts of lube grease into each zert. Should be done with each oil change but some dealerships overlook this.

The point I'm trying to make is that there is stuff to double check.

The 17s now have no zerks. Not sure I'm happy about that. I know my 16 was low on grease when I climbed under there.

I have mixed feelings on them taking away the Zerks too.

I'm not sure either. There are advantages to having zerts. The early 2016's have something like 5 zerts. The mid year 2016's have fewer. Kind of weird but good to know this stuff.

Yep and now the 17's have none. I would rather have them.

    I love my 17...

As for the diff lock. I have noticed if both back wheels are traveling at the same spees no slipping, the diff will not lock quickly. Ie straight line on the road.

As soon as one wheel turns differently than the other, it locks immediately. Or if you turn from side to aide to get the wheels to move differently.
