Oh, if it's a full turn or two from the bottom, I'd say leave it alone for sure. Especially if you have plumbers tape on it. Removing and re-doing will only cause issues. I say leave it especially if you got it snug and it's not fully at the bottom.

Ok, so I'm assuming you never had the extended breather mod done. Well, once everything gets figured out with your rear end, installing this mod isn't going to hurt anything and will only protect your rear end better from water than the stock setup. This modification has been tried and tested ever since the first gens came out.

Have seen no actual documented evidence this breather mod actually does anything to save a rear differential. If the dealer sees a mod like this I'd be more concerned they'll blame such a mod for any rear diff issue.

Again, your call, man. There are plenty of people in this forum and others that say otherwise to both of your concerns (effectiveness and dealer concerns). Also as mentioned above, the mod is completely reversible (very quickly, too) if the dealer issue is your hold up. Sounds like you're just not buying into this so really, if you don't like the mod or agree with it, don't do it and unsubscribe from the thread. It's your truck, right?

Hey thanks for the post! I do have tape on it and it is in there solid and tight. I'm pretty sure I don't have any worries too. So many mods to do and such little time. I have so many parts to go on but too busy being a Dad.

I assume the barb fitting pn will work on my '16 4Runner? Axel looks the same to me. I need to buy 2 of each to do my taco and runner. Cheap insurance, and my taco especially, will see lots of water with my line of work.

Water in the diff is a BAD thing!
The mod helps prevent water from sucking into the diff. That is a good thing!

So you have evidence of water being sucked into differentials? I have never seen this happen. You'd think it is a prolific issue being that the mod seems so popular. I've never seen or heard of this being an issue.

I reported it here in 2010, and often since. The fluid was milky when inspected by Toyota service after my trip, and that indicates water contamination.

It has never been milky since, when replaced twice. I did the mod after that trip... here's other vehicles in our Baja caravan in 2010, where it happened:

IF TOYOTA PUTS A REAL BREATHER, on the end of a hose, on the FRONT diff...
WHY is anyone questioning the logic of having the same protection for the back diff???

OTHER trucks have real breathers up high, on a tube, in back. WHY is the Tacoma not also doing it in the back, but is on the front 4WD diff? One of the FEW factory fails!

Better yet, WHY is anyone arguing to NOT have the highest level of protection for something that moves your truck and if it fails leaves you stuck?

This MOD is about the cheapest and easiest mod that has the one of most beneficial results available.

I agree it's a mod that should be done, however most people will never see 18"+ of water so likely not benefit them.

I'll be doing it to my Tacoma for sure as I work in the woods for a living, and some operations get pretty sloppy at times.

OH, agree... that is why I think it should be at least done on the Off Road TRDs and all 4WDs. It only makes sense!

My 2004 had the factory one way breather, it was completely clogged with crud, I needed 2 new axel seals and $$$$$ for labour. The shop blamed it on the diff valve/breather which I tend to agree with as the pressure wouldn't release like it should, so out went the axel seals. It's a stupid factory design IMO and cost me about a grand to fix.

Only on a 4WD, if no differential then no breather.

There are two, near the battery/fuse block, pointed up with black tubes running down.

This is the one I bought. Can't wait to install it. It will let me do front and rear diff. Transmission. And the winch. Then has room for 2 more. Gonna run it to the engine compartment near the battery.

Photos of it are posted, but maybe the 3rd gen is different? Look for 3/8" +/- black tubes running up from the diff and ADD area.

For some of those doubting this...apparently ARB finds it worthy enough of a concern that they make a product solely available for this.

    http://store.arbusa.com/ARB-Differential-Breather-Kit-170112-P22783.aspx

Not that I advocate this kit by any means over just getting the parts described in this thread, but if you read their description for this it explains similar to what David has been saying...
