Do you need to know, or care?
Not trying to be rude here, but search "locking gas cap" in the search at the top of the page on the right, pick this forum and you'll find a ton of threads on this topic and suggestions to what others have used. Yes, they work.

All I can say is that it has been working fine for me. Takes some twist torque to remove, but no CEL.

You know that the way to steal gas is drilling a hole or holes in the gas tank right? Faster than siphoning.... just sayin' and tweakers.

I'm betting that the locking gas cap would not stop anyone wanting your fuel.

I work near a high school and am more concerned about funny stuff going in my tank than stealing my fuel. A locking cap can be broken off but it is some added protection.

Just curious, why do you want to carry additional key? Or is there another reason like people suck out your gas? Just curious

Don't park it where it can be seen, I'm in HS right now and kids from my school will mess with any car they see. They even tried to get it in my driveway, caught them in the act. Dicks were drawn in the mud on my hood.

Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.

If a locked gas cap gets a thief or vandal to move on to an easier victim, then it's done its job.

yep. the locking cap is merely a mild deterrent, but it works for pranksters. i was one of those HS A holes who would put sugar in a work truck gas tank just to get a laugh. this is also why I would use a locking cap, not for actual fuel theft concerns.

I purchased one from orielly auto parts worked OK for a few days then I parked on a hill. Check engine light came on and the trac control off light came on, which is a different dummy light then my switch on the roof center console to disable the trailer sway control. I reset the check engine light and now only use the locking cap when I park it for the day. Yeah I know it blows carrying 2 gas caps, but it's better than some one dumping anything into my tank.

Not that it really matters here, but I liked the way my old 2000 Tacoma was set up as the gas door itself had a lock (not the cap) that used the same key as the ignition and doors.

With my 2009 Jeep Wrangler, you could buy an OEM accessory gas cap that keyed itself to your ignition key. Pretty handy in not requiring a second key.

I'll probably pick up one of these caps before my next backpacking outing; when leaving a vehicle at a trailhead for a couple days or so I'd like to make it just that much less easy to mess with. On an everyday basis I don't much need one though so haven't been bothered to get one.
