2nd time going to Moab/Canyonlands 1st week of October

Anyone going to Moab on the weekend of March 30 - April 2nd want to join me on my adventure? Me and a few buddies are going for the first time overnight camping in Canyonlands white rim trail. Any tips for this first timer

It will be cold and the weather will be unpredictable during that timeframe. So be ready for sun, rain, and possibly snow all in one day. Depending on how much moisture the area has had recently be careful of trails that travel the washed out areas as they can flash flood quickly. And have fun damnit!

 

when is the best time to go?

 

My personal opinion is fall. September into October. Part of the reason we are moving Rock Therapy to October this year. May is good too but you have to watch out for the thunderstorms as they create flash flooding.

 

Yes I will post as many pics as I can whenever I have cell service. Thanks for the heads up I'm hoping no rain, snow and especially flash floods as it will be dangerous.

 

I will be doing the White Rim trail a Couple of weeks before you. I will try and post a report and some Pictures!

 

if your going get permission from the ranger station. I was there last february and needed snow chains. The Rangers warned us No one was out there and the cell coverage on the west side on the point is null. Not sure how many people will be there when you are out. I was on a solo run (me and my son in my FJ) and it was the largest snow fall on record. 15 deg in Canyonlands south with lots of black ice on the roads on the shady spots. Shafer trail was closed... we went into White rim via pot ash road. I dreamed of doing the entire white rim, but one there I found the other trail in the area more scenic - we only stayed a day on white rim and turned around.

Get moab guide book with trail ratings and do your research. I have been here 4 times, mostly on the Adventure bike F800gs camping as we go....

We also went up in the mountains (east of moab), snow boarded and camped in a snow camp we built. Have fun... have questing where to go PM me....

Canyon lands was awesome, went for the first time this year, no taco taco pics but it was pretty place!
I would like to go back and explore more of the off-road trails, I want to off-road at Capitol Reef too..
I read something about a pretty cool connector trail between arches and island in the sky, we didn't have the time but I would look it up, I'm sure there's a lot of member on here with good info!

I'll be there first week of March if anyone is around. Just 2 months after my first Moab visit

 

nice pics guys. I have 2 night permits at campground airport A and potato bottom C, have anyone stayed or experienced those 2 campgrounds before? Can I camp anywhere along the white rim trail if I wanted to or does it have to be at a designated camp area. Are there rangers that actually check for permits?

 

My story...
I tried for years to take my motorcycle buddies on white rim... they refused because of the fear of sand. Soooo I finally was able to do it last year with my 17 year old son in my 2014 off road edition 4X4 FJ.

I had a permit to stay in the same spots... You are supposed to stay in that spot, no off site camping. The camping spots are very far from the Canyon overlooks - not very scenic in comparison to everything else around. Some may feel differently. I much rather camp at Islands in the Sky or Dead Horse state park. If you have a large group, it may be more fun???

The trail is very, very, long because with a stock built truck you need to take you time (big holes and dry creek beds). You have to really really like off roading to enjoy the entire loop. We did a full long day and turned around at dusk... With a full tank of gas I am not sure I would have had enough to make the entire route, because there was a very good chance the exit road would have been too icy too exit.


Going here (white rim) is a real balance of time vs seeing it all. Every time I have going I only have 5 days to take it all in. If that is the case I recommend taking other trails in the area. The white rim take a lots of time with not much of a change in scenery in comparison to the others areas.

Riding in the Mountains around Castle valley.
Hiking Arches National park
Canyon Lands South - The Needles.
I rented bikes and road some slick rock with my kids (brought 3 rented another 2).

How many vehicles does your white rim permit allow? I'm off 31st - 3rd and am interested in joining. Could jam out to Moab Thurs after work
