Gather round the campfire as I tell you the tale of a jacked up 2016 Taco. So I purchased a 2016 TRD Off-Road (Double cab Automatic short bed) last July, shortly after receiving it I noted the complete lack of power and I was avg 16 mpg and I drive like an old lady. So bring it in and they flash the TSB and reset the computer, at the same time I have them adjust the bump stops because of the hood rattle.
I believe in break in so I drive the truck for about 2500 miles before I bring it in to have the oil changed (I paid) and note to them the tranny is still lacking power and I kind of get the brush off. After leaving the dealership I noted a smell of burning oil, not uncommon but weird so I just take note of it. After a week of driving the burning smell is still there so I make an appointment to have it taken in and also apply the “new” Rev 1 to the TSB. I was told the oil smell was leftover oil from the last change and the TSB has been applied…well it felt like one of those pat on the head and don’t worry your pretty little head about it. So I emailed the service manager and told him my concern with how it was handled as far as “pat on the head” and I listed the issues I’ve had and how many times I've been back and forth to the shop…also the service guy was not the same one I’ve used and he was a bit off-putting.

Service manager shoots the email right up the chain to the General Manager, he and I talk telephonically and assures me he will handle the issue but asks that I bring the truck back and he will have the techs put in UV dye to find the leak and also check the truck over for all my concerns. I go that day and there are 5 people around me looking at the truck, they put in the dye and I show them the average mpg I am getting and the lead mechanical tells me that something is obviously wrong and resets the computer. I have him drive it but not before showing them the hood issue, they see it delaminating (right word?) from the supports and tell me they are ordering a new hood. The lead Mechanic agrees with me aon all counts and resets the computer and tells me to drive it like I stole it, I told him I would if he pays for the frickin fuel (they topped me off) and we have a great conversation while he is driving about the EPA mandates and how the gearing is comply with them and this tranny shouldn’t have 6 gears and on and on.
So I drive it fairly aggressive for 500 miles and bring it back to them but not before I lose all my gears. I was with my son Moose hunting (we got one) the previous day to taking it in and truck decides it doesn’t like Drive or Reverse and the system just whines (I have video I’ll post), after leaving the truck off for 15min I got Reverse and I let it sit for another 15min and I get Drive but what in the actual Eff is going on? I drop the truck off and show them the video and explain what happened, they give me a loaner and tell me they will call. So the dreaded call goes like this:

“Um, yeah we found the oil leak, it’s the Cam tower. We have to order a new one”

“Fuck, what about the trans issues?”

“Yeah about that, we can’t get it to cycle out of 4wd. We have to order a new Transfer case and possibly rear diff.”
    “Da Fuq? Soooooo”

“If you will hold a second our GM wants to talk to you.”

    *hold*

“Mr. Goochwarmer, I am so sorry this is happening to you, I am not sure what is going on but we want to fix this. Can you come in to discuss putting you in a newer model and getting you out of this problem?”

“I’ll be there in an hour”

So good news is even before I have to get angry and yelly, the GM states he hasn’t seen anyone with as much bad luck as me on a vehicle…mind you this is the first new vehicle I have bought in my entire life, everything else was a used (at least 5 years). Everyone is very nice and sympathetic I am having these issue and want to fix it from them offering to remove all the add-ons I have put on the truck and putting them on whatever I decide to get, to offering me more coffee than I can drink and how comfortable I am.
After kicking it around with the GM, Assistant GM and HH-6 (wife) I decided to step into a 2017 TRD Off-road (double cab MANUAL short bed). Because I had been in some sketch areas hunting I had some scratches and some damage to the right front, plus mileage (albeit shitty mileage) I took a hit but the peace of mind I know have and the way I was treated by the dealership I have no qualms about how it was handled.

So for now I am happy as a clam with the Manual tranny and wouldn’t step back into an Auto unless there was a gun pointed at me. Yes I was pissed at the time wasted back and forth and my trust in Toyota is a bit sketchy but we will see how this plays out. The way it was handled (as a lemon) but without stating a lemon kept it from going to corporate and we dealt with it locally. I am sure someone will question what I paid extra but I won’t post that because let’s be honest, ½ will say I got screwed and the other ½ will say good deal…the fact remains I am happy with the outcome. I guess my point here is that if you are having issues deal with it as an adult and lay out your issues one by one, let them see the issues you’ve encountered and see how they deal with it before you get agitated.

 So you handled it internally (with the dealership) and essentially they sold you and profited on two vehicles? Ouch! I bet they love you for that

    Good good

They should have given you close to what you paid for your 2016 new if they were really trying to win you over. Even with the damage. I'd say that if they gave you less than $1500 UNDER what you originally paid for your 2016 then they hosed you

And that is why I won't post what I paid for on the difference, you assume too much Mr. Smitty! I could post I paid a dollar for the DMV fees and someone would say "Too Much, you got F*cked!"

They did well, the damage was taken off the truck because of how much work was required. I rubbed the right front against a fence on my moose hunt and it was going to hurt thru insurance or them, so either way. But you are in the ballpark

OP is happy with the outcome and that is what is important.

Good that the dealership took care of you without having to involve corporate, as that would have likely drawn out the proceedings a good bit.

Glad you are happy with the manual, but some of us have traumatic clutch leg injuries in our past that eliminate a manual as a daily driver.

I say that not to disparage your choice of transmission, but to chide Toyota for apparently being unable to build a decent automatic trans when everyone else in the market seems to be able to.

    Heck, Toyota builds good ones.

Maybe they should reassign some of their own engineers.

Toyota builds a great product and the auto trans in my 2017 Taco is wonderful.

Rest assured that people who experiencing trans issue are in the extreme minority. This forum just makes it seem huge.

Disclaimer: I actually have no freaking idea how many people have bad trannies but mines great

If it were just an Extreme Minority then why does Toyota have TSB's on the issue, it cant just be a few guys on this Forum?

I agree with this, I have a bad back and feet but I find that this isn't as difficult to shift and compress the clutch. If I have another foot surgery that may change and my wife and I may switch cars for a bit. But I do love the control it affords me over the automatic.

The '16 auto I test drove sucked.

Granted that was before the TSB revisions and I also live in a hilly area, but it was enough to make me put off buying for a while.

Long enough that now I will likely wait to see what Ford, Jeep, and the revamped Frontier bring to the table.
