I replaced the front chrome grille and front chrome bumper with Black parts in the post I Hate Chrome. I wanted to replace the rear chrome bumper later with a Black replacement part, but found the back bumper is over $200 in black. So I decieded to paint the rear chrome bumper. I found the key info is to rough up the chrome a lot and use Self Etching Primer.
Here is a link to info http://www.ripper1.com/tech/paint_over_chrome.php

So I roughed up the chrome using an angle grinder. Started with the bumper on the truck and then took it off the truck. Need to use a smaller grinder to get into the corners and in cracks. Can't leave any chrome shinny.

Here is the angle grinder. This tool made this really easy. You don't want to sand this by hand, just takes too long.

And the Black rear bumper. I think this truck should be Black to match the bumpers and grille:)

The only chrome left on this truck is the emblems, Next week and they are gone:D

Man, that looks so much better. I really want to do this too. If you don't mind, what exact primer did you use and where did you get it?

It was about 5 hours. Some of that was watching paint dry.

Primer is Rust-oleum Primer Self Etching Primer, got it at Auto Zone. I was very pleased with the way the paint flowed, covered, didn't run and was just real easy to use. I used Rust-oleum top coat also, dont like to mix brands on one paint job.

Like you BRP prep is huge when dealing with chrome, got to get all the shine good and gone. I learned that with my previous Ranger project, paint and primer will flake off after a while if not prep'ed right. Looks good!

I took all the emblems off except for the one on the grill that is painted black. I usually paint them black and put them back on but I think it looks better witout emblems . I took the ones off the sides also.

I put a tow bar on the front of the truck this morning. Had to take the front skid plate off to get at the frame. I may weld the skid plate mounts back on the tow bar. The reason I put the tow bar on was to have a lift point on the front for the Hy lift jack(don't have sliders). I lifted both front wheels off the ground using the tow bar as the lift point. And it can be used as a recovery point for the front.
