Standard weight rating is 200lb. 500lb ratings are usually for rugged models. Keep in mind this is dynamic weight (ie. while moving), and static weight ratings are higher for both. I'd still get a reinforced cap if I was going to use a RTT.

TRD Pro Grill, ARE CX HD shell, step bars, Wet Okole, Husky Liners

Went with the ARE CX HD model here with intent of future roof top tent and LOTS of whitewater kayaks/canoes when no RTT in place.

The ARE CX HD has an internal frame that is rated at 550lbs by manufacturer but likely can hold more. Rack also offers a ton of neato options inside shell for mounting gear and such. The HD models do have limitations on window options.

    NOTES:
    - ARE proprietary rack system on top that is NOT adjustable
    - ARE rack will work with aftermarket items from Thule, Yakima, et al
    - ARE OEM rack bars are short but you can order longer ones for additional cost

I can get pics of the shell if anyone is interested.....just drop me a line

Well I got a quote from a place in Anchorage for the ARE CX HD with overland lining whatever it's called. 2500 just for the topper and close to 500 for that lining lol so 3k. That is with NO options. Nooooooo thanks. I'll just get the softopper for under 800 shipped and build a cage for a RTT and call it a day.

The local ARE dealer told me the CX has been discontinued and wouldn't quote it. They said the CX new version should be out soon and supposedly combines features of the Z (rear door) and versatility of the V and CX series. I didn't want to wait and the V had all the options available that I wanted and was $500+ cheaper than similar spec'ed alternatives from Leer and SnugTop.

Hey man, not sure if you're sold on the softopper yet, but I was quoted ~3k as well for a Leer 100XR from Six Robblees in Anchorage, headliner/sliding windows/removable sliding front window/interior lighting/auto lock. It's expensive as hell, but they're determined to make a fortune off of shipping to AK and HI. They also have Snugtops, but I got a price quote like you did for the ARE. I would have loved to get a bed rack and RTT but I need to lock my gear and dog up somewhere besides the back seat.

That's interesting. I just received a couple quotes for the CX HD from my local ARE dealers and no mention of this. Maybe check with a different dealer?

Anyone on here have the ARE Overland Topper? I am close to pulling the trigger with the rack track but no bars. Just talked to a dealer and he stated that the HD option on the CX adds approx $1000 to the cost of the topper. I want to do an RTT and this one says it's reinforced around the stress areas.

I will go with softopper, build a platform in the bed to stick valuables under it, then build my own cage around the softopper for a rtt. Save me a but load of money and do my own custom things. I will.not spend that much on a fiberglass topper. That's well into some bad as suspension territory.

The Overland and the V-Series are built using the same mold, and it fits great if you ask me.

Thank you - I've been studying photos of the overhang but honestly most seem pretty similar. Seems the Overland fits pretty well but haven't seen it in person. BTW - Your truck is sweet!

Both ARE dealers I spoke with told me the Overland and V are the exact same shell. The Overland just gets the small patch of bedliner on the edges and slightly smaller windows and then they charge you an extra $180 or so. That was the price difference between the quotes I received V and the Overland. I went with the V and am happy with it. It really comes down to whether you want the two-tone finish, construction is identical.

A.R.E. V Series with roof rails, windoors with aluminum inserts, T-Handle locks, tilt sliding front window.

    Almost $3200 installed.

Color match is virtually perfect, depending on the angle you look at it it can appear off, but given there are so many complex curves on the truck and cap, it usually looks exact.

One thing to note that I haven't seen mentioned is when I ordered my cap I was told that the locks could be rekeyed to the truck so I wouldn't need to carry a separate key. Unfortunately the center cut key Toyota uses does not work and I do in fact need to carry a separate lock key, not a big deal but sort of a bummer.

What type of options did you buy with the Z series? I'm thing of getting one. Are you happy with it?

I've been getting some mixed feedback around putting a RTT on a shell. I was thinking of doing the ARE Overland series shell. Will have 2 humans, and 3 dogs about 50-60lbs each. I don't know much about distributed load ratings and whatnot, but heard conflicting things that says not to do that and some do it all day long?
