First I will start off by saying I know there was some other write up for this. However there were not a lot of photos. So I took plenty as I did the Mod on my truck today.

Second this is for the RS3200 security system. I think most 1st gens with keyless entry will have this system but double check yours.

Third I am not responsible if you screw up your system ;)

    On to the write up

What you will need. Phillips and Flat head screwdrivers to remove panels. 10mm socket, 16 or 18 gauge wire (I used 16 because I already had some) wire cutters, and soldering tool.

First you will need to take off your driver side door sill and foot panel to gain access to the TVIP. It will be the black box surrounded by foam. Use a 10mm socket to take out the 1 bolt holding it in place. At this point you should be looking at something like this.
    P1020998.jpg

Make sure it only says RS3200 on it! You can find it next to the FCc logo. If it does not say RS3200 DO NOT CONTINUE!

Now that you have confirmed it to be RS3200 we will look at the big connector on the box. Disconnect it now and you will look for the wire on the bottom right. That is the slot for the antenna on our 1st gen models. It should be grey with a black stripe.
    P1020999.jpg
Now undo the electrical tape holding all the wires together and pull the black and grey one from the rest of them.
    P1040004.jpg

Next remove your pillar with hand guard you will need a flat head screwdriver and 10mm socket. I then used a thin welding rod to help fish the new wire behind and under the dash. Take your time and don't force it down keep trying until you find the path. You will have to get under the dash by the pedals and help pull it the rest of the way.

    P1040009.jpg
    P1040010.jpg P1040011.jpg

Now I spliced the plastic insulator around the antenna wire. I did not want to cut it completely but you can. Just made it easier to solder without cutting.
    P1040014.jpg

Then wrapped the new wire around it and soldered it.
    P1040015.jpg
    P1040018.jpg

Now tape it up with electrical tape, Tape up the bundle of wire and plug the connector back in.

    P1040020.jpg

Now I screwed the black box back into its place. Then I taped my wire up the pillar to the white box at the headliner. I taped the inside of the white box and you will find out why next.

    P1040024.jpg

Ok last steps. I tore the sheathing off of about 18" of my new wire (my thoughts were that the more copper showing the better it would be) then I coiled it all up and put it in the white boxP1040023.jpg

This is why I tape off the inside so no copper was exposed to metal.
    P1040025.jpg
    P1040026.jpg

Now reinstall the panels and enjoy your extended range remote :)

I went from 15' to a 100' range. Could probably go further too.

Interesting. I have zero feet right now. I took my fob off because it only works for 2 or 3 feet.

This will help. Sounds like your battery in the fob might need replacement as well.

The hole for the lanyard broke too. This might motivate me to actually fix it. Thanks for posting and taking so many pics.

Need a new fob from Toyota. I had the same problem and I got a new fob and now I can go way farther than 100 feet even without modding lol

Oooh, nice! It would be like having a modern car again!

It looks like they're about $60 or so. Does that sound about right?

Although, I almost don't care. It's not my daily driver. I go weeks without driving my truck. There are other things the truck needs before that as well. Like a beer to put in my 12v fridge, charcoal canister, fix the vibration, front bumper, winch, rear bumper with tire swing out, trasharoo, beer to put in my 12v fridge, road trips, camping trips.

I was getting tired of the short range, so a couple years ago I did the "steal my wife's fob and give her mine" mod. Instantly gave me 50' of range, but that's since gone back down to 10' or so.

Probably just need some new batteries...

Thinking about the coiled wire in the pillar...

I'm not sure this is useful for extending the range very much. There's a reason regular radio antennas are long and straight, and not coiled up under the hood.

Anyone try just extending the wire up the pillar without coiling it?

When you bought your Keyless entry FOB. Did you have to get it programmed? If so, how much did that cost? Is the dealer the only one who can program it? Since if anyone could do it then you could have FOB's that would unlock a ton of different Toyotas.

My remote came with instructions. Basically you find the rs3000 (i don't have rs3200) black box (behind driver kick panel) and push the little green button for 3 seconds, then push the top button of fob= programmed. Super easy.

Yes, you could do this on a "random" truck but you'd obviously have to have access to their interior to remove the kick panel.

I tried that, didn't work nearly as well. Also, most antennas actually have a little bit of wire coiled around a straight pole. Have a look at the OEM radio antenna or any Firestik CB antenna. Same concept.

I read about one guy who did it like that but he took it to the rear view mirror, he said it didn't get him very far with range. I think he said that he was limited to around 50'. Mine was working at about 150' this morning when I was testing it again.

Same, I've had this mod done for a year or so, and the range is still insane. Even with the OEM remote with the original batteries

Interesting. That doesn't seem to do anything beyond what I was able to do with a fresh remote.

I understand about the coils around the oem and whip antennas, but those only loose a relatively small % of overall length when loosely coiled around a rod. Just seemed to me like the large coil at the end was wasting wire for little increased function.

    I appear to be wrong...
