This is not an acceptable amount of oil loss. That amount should definitely has symptoms along with it such as leak, smoking, etc.
Not to go out of subject but every body says that they are putting 5.5qts with filter. Mine only takes 5 and I drain it well. My dipstick is a little bit over the full mark with only 5 qts. Even the manual book says 5.5 or 5.7 don't remember exactly. But definitely I am not going with it and overfill my engine o_O:confused:

I would.... never change oil viscosity from recommended type... that is just asking for issues. there is a reason why all manufactures recommend a certain type of oil.

You have to remember some of the oil stays in the oil filter once the engine is ran for the first time after an oil change, as well as throughout the engine while it's running, so it has less in the pan. And you definitely want plenty of oil in the pan so the pickup tube never sucks in air. I had a car that if it was any where between a half and a quart low and you took a hard turn, the oil pressure light would flash. Your engine isn't any different than any other Toyota 4.0. Anywhere you look, it says 5.5qts and that's not a mistake. It's unlikely that underfilling it by half a quart will ever cause any problems, but I haven't heard of any problems from putting the amount that is listed everywhere and I've seen a couple tacos north of 300k with no problems and I'm sure they've been filling it to 5.5qts.

Mine takes 5.5 at the fill, and doesn't use anything that I can tell between 5K oil changes. I never add a drop. I run my truck up on ramps for the oil change. I use mobil 1 5-30, and I have over 150K.

I know what you saying and thought about it since the oil filter is siting in an upright position. But so does my BMWs oil filter. I don't think Toyota engineers did not take that into consideration before making the dip stick marks.
I check my oil often and specially in the morning, because that oil dip stick is only good for a one shot deal :D

    Little bit of stuff.
My 06 has 249k on her. 4.0 liter. manual trans. Oil has been changed with full synthetic every 3000 miles religiously since birth. Burns about half a quart between changes, no leaks. ever.

My point: take that truck back and have the dealer tear her apart. I work at a Honda dealership, we've been replacing pistons, rings, and head gaskets on an alarming number of our 6 cylinders. Express your distaste, respectfully demand an explanation and solution.

    ^^^ This made me laugh.

Do not take your truck in and demand to have the dealership take it apart. I see no good that can come from that. Your truck is fine.

You change your oil every 3K with full synthetic? Waste of money and the environment hates you.

Not a waste of money, I pay about 30 bucks to either do it myself or have one of the guys do it at work. And we burn waste oil here, but the environment hates me regardless. Kind of overkill I know, but I do it in the hopes that she lives at least another decade. Current goal is 400,00 miles, and I ain't rushing.

Same here, 5 even. I use one full Mobil-1 5qt jug and call it a day.

I've never seen the level go down at all, at almost 70K miles now. Change it every 5K miles.

Yup that what I am doing. Usually I get good deals on mobil1 jug from Walmart. And the deal used to get screwed by buying a single qt. not anymore

Again, same here. It's like $23.90 and I get factory toyota filters from the dealer for like $4.80 each. Easiest oil change going and a great price for full synthetic.

One of my fav features with the 4x4 is that I don't have to raise the truck to do oil and grease the u joints. And the filter on top, omfg

I lose maybe a quart in 5k miles. Mobil one 5-30 from wally world, with a factory D3 filter. It's taller than the one from the factory

Same for Prerunners. I drive mine up on 2x4s to fit a 5 quart jug under Fumoto. I change every 7500 with syn. Syn will go 7500 easily.

I don't have a fumoto. I just drain into a pan and refill the jug with the used oil

Purely stock.. at least for now. I would like to replace the front/rear bumper for something sturdier, also having a nice set of bolt-on frame sliders would be good to have.
My 2010 V6 has 348k km on it. First time it ever burned any oil was at 260ish when I was moving and I may have somewhat overloaded it.
This time at 348k km it somehow used a good bit of oil on a 1300km trip. I drove almost constantly for 14hrs, with fuel stops practically unloaded. Oil was about a 1/4" above the low mark. I'm thinking it could be the EGR valve, although I have had it changed 5 years ago at 260k km..

Does anyone have any tips on prolonging her life? I'm getting a little worried that there might an end of a line in sight..

    Regards,
    Matt
