It lives up to its name... Deep ruts, deep water holes, slick ass mud. Some bypasses are more difficult than the trail itself.

I made it through by myself, but I would not recommend doing it by yourself without a winch and good recovery stuff. I went when everything else was completely dry, if you go when stuff is melting it's probably pretty deep in places.

This was one area where i slowly dropped into one of the holes...
    DSC055102.jpg

Another area, i tried to stay out of the ruts and about halfway down i just slid sideways into them and put a dent in the top of my door against a tree or the dirt wall.

It is some really cool scenery, but even when it was dry, the northern half was pretty well concentrated with mud. I could tell a lot of the southern side was muddy at times, just not when i was there.

This is the far north end after the mud.

    I don't know what you're talking about.

My Hankooks made it through all the mud just fine.

@Reh5108 almost had to save me. We met up afterwards and spent multiple hours clearing rocky point (i think it's called).

Little Muddy Creek... put it in 4wd before going for a swim!

The "bypass" to the left had some nasty ruts. I figured this was the easier way.

    How to Register
To register your OHV in your name for the first time, complete the OHV Registration Form and return it, along with your proof of ownership, to:

Colorado Parks and Wildlife - Registration Unit
    13787 South Highway 85
    Littleton, CO 80125
    303-791-1920
You may also register your vehicle at various OHV dealers or many Colorado Parks and Wildlife offices. View our OHV Registration Agent Locations List to find the registration location nearest you. Always call ahead to ensure services are available.

Effective July 1, 2014, Title is required for all power sports vehicle dealers and auctioneer sales. OHV titling is optional for private party to private party sales. For titling information, see Titling Off Road Vehicles SB13-280 on the Department of Revenue website.

It seems like the law's been unclear and there's been lots of debating back and forth if you need an OHV sticker for your truck for the past several years. Surprised to see a list of trails where you need one, instead of just saying you need one. Curious to hear if they actually enforce it.

I've got a plated, street legal, KTM and I still need an OHV sticker for that.

Is this a yearly application or lifetime for as long as you own the vehicle registered?

I'm pretty sure that's just for actual "off highway vehicles" not 4x4 trucks.
OHV is the key acronym here.

    Colorado OHV Permit requirements:
All OHVs and motor vehicles (including motorcycles) that display a valid Colorado or out-of -state license plate must also display a current Colorado OHV use permit sticker when operated on designated OHV trails in Colorado.

All out of state OHVs (including OHVs that display an out of state OHV registration) must also display a current Colorado OHV use permit sticker when operated on designated OHV trails or routes in Colorado.

so you still need it, but only for those on the list...those on the list are not actually roads, they are trails...any "trail" that is on a designated road, does not require a permit. only travel on the non-designated roads are required..even for licensed vehicles

I had heard something about this in the past, and all the questions about whether it counted for non-OHV vehicles (for the record, "Off-highway vehicles (OHVs) include motorcycles, dirt bikes, three-wheelers, ATVs, and dune buggies that are operated on public land or trails in Colorado."). Prior to seeing this list, I'd never heard of specific requirements and the whole 'trail' designation thing/list. I'm kind of surprised, especially given some of the trails on that list. I don't know much about the western ones, but I recognize a couple of the names. Most are harder trails, but Jenny Creek and Hancock Pass? In the past when I've checked, it seems like anything that would require a permit was something I'd never even consider running.

I wonder if there's a map somewhere that shows just these trails. All I'm finding with a quick look is maps of all OHV trails. I might look into this more with some of the FS districts now providing their MVUM data in GIS format. Seems like they should have picked a different name or terminology or something to help separate out this group from all the trails where OHVs must be permitted but 'full size' are fine. The whole registration vs permit thing with the same name just seems ripe for a whole lot of confusion.

BTW, since no one has posted the link for the official regulating body and where some of these quotes are coming from yet: http://cpw.state.co.us/buyapply/Pages/RegistrationsOHV.aspx

    Last chance call for Moab.

Leaving tomorrow morning, and heading back Sunday. Hitting up hanging lake for picture time on the way out, and plan to explore the wedge area and maybe the top area of Capitol reef.
