Allot of people go with the handhelds for the portable feature. I myself have a Cobra handheld and it's perfect as a trail radio.

Think it was just called "Cobra HH" for handheld as I don't think they offer any other hand held radios. If I had my choice, I'd rather have the Midland that you linked.

In the past month, mine has afforded me the opportunity to avoid 2 different major traffic delays (due to wrecks) and a probable speeding citation. Car that WAS on my back bumper kept going when I heard "bear on the side with clock".....1/2 mile up the road, that car was sitting there with a Ky State Trooper leaned in his drivers window.

Not to mention the comedy riot every day when the truckers get into their well informed political diatribes!

Find a local CB shop.....Mechanics at truck stops will clue you in on where. They'll have used radios in the $30 to $50 range that have been "peaked and tuned" (ie, wattage jacked up) A simple magnetic mount antenna OR a good Firestik will get you in business! FCC limits power on new radios to 4 watts. They can usually be peaked to north of 10 watts with a small screwdriver. A 10 watt CB will rattle the windows of anyone within a few miles. Reception is far better on your end too. My new radio is set at 7-1/2 watts and I routinely talk with people over 10 miles away. I had one of the small Cobra Ultra IV's. It was OK, but sorta weak beyond a 2 mile range. New one is a Cobra 29 XLT Classic. Old school radio but still sold in big numbers to truckers.

I've got an SWR meter, RF power meter, etc, and can tune a CB with the best of 'em. Not a lot to it.
