"Trail" is kind of a catch all term around here, like"lets go run a trail" usually reserved for something that a Prius or Fiat can't get down. But in reality, they are really unmaintained roads, usually leftover from logging, mining, routes over the pass, etc...
    Just throwing that out. :D

Call Goodyear to see if they had any time today for a rotate and balance... And they hung up. I'll take that as a no?

I had to install those a123 systems batteries for a while. Interesting theory as those batteries could only be charged by the outlet, regen charging only went to the standard hybrid battery. They could increase the distance driven in EV mode up to 50 miles. When driving to keep the vehicle from kicking out of EV you could not go above 37mph or press on the accelerator above 50%.

Great idea other then the CO2 cost is diverted to coal fired power plants. The costs to mine and produce the battery would offset the CO2 costs of owning a normal gas car.

I either never saw the cabin or never went far enough back. I definitely wasn't aware there was a 4x4 trail there, or how far back it went. When I was there plenty of trees around to create little clearings for different groups to occupy. After the fire in 2012 though, it's pretty much barren. And then the flood in 2013 changed things just as much. I haven't stopped since, but I've driven by it a couple times. Seems to me Willows and underbrush filled in quite a bit down by the road, but not much of anything on the hillside. I do remember with the close, steep hillsides that shotguns and long guns are loud. I also remember what a mess that places was with target debris and shells/brass. Seems like it got closed down once or twice and there were cleanup days, similar to a couple of the spots out at Pawnee.

The cabin was less than a mile back, past the popular wide spot that everybody shoots at. It was back in the early '90's when I saw it last.
4-5 years ago I was rabbit hunting back there and you could still see some of the stonework from the chimney/fireplace from the site, but most of it had been reclaimed by Mother Nature. I bet the flood brought it all down. The road itself only went for a mile or so and came to an end.

A road has FR at the top of its carsonite marker, while a trail just has TR. :p

But seriously it looks like, at least using USFS as an example and without digging into BLM specific regs, that there are five classes of roads/trails, and obviously one of them is where this gray area is coming up:
    • Roads open to highway legal vehicles only
    • Roads open to all vehicles (licensed and unlicensed)
    • Trails open to vehicles 50 inches or less in width (ATV, motorcycle, etc.)
    • Trails open to all (full size) vehicles (trails may be rugged and narrow - intended for 4x4s)
    • Trails open to motorcycles only (single track)

Now what's interesting to me is that I've see lots of those 'jeep only' designated trails (or were they roads?) that aren't on that list of permit requiring trails. So either there's some overlap, or things are changing. The distinction made on the Stay the Trail page (which may or may not have roots in actual governing body language that I haven't found yet) is "Although these trails allow for full width vehicles, they differ from most BLM and U.S. Forest Service roads as they are designed for recreational, motorized use rather than simply for transportation." And again you're back to somewhat arbitrary designations. Jenny Creek (and for that matter Old Tin Cup) is a side spur parallel to a road open to all and going the same place, so it could be argued it's only for recreation and not transportation. I also wonder if it might have made the list since it was rebuilt 'recently' and perhaps if funds from OHV were used to do it, that might make a justification for adding it to the permit require list? Which could potentially imply as other trails are improved or repaired they might also become permitted? Hancock Pass on the other hand... Well yeah there are other passes that go the same place, sort of, but that seems like a tougher argument there.

Maybe someone with some FS, DOW, or club connections could do a little question asking. :D
