I keep my SWR meter in the glove box of my truck. It takes all of 5 minutes to tune an antenna. It's a good practice to check them occasionally anyway. Way out in the boonies away from cell towers, light poles, overhead wires, buildings and signs is the BEST place to set it. LBL just could be the SWR Mecca!

@Bluegrass Taco I may ask you to help me set mine while at LBL, if I don't get it done here soon.

Another dirty little secret to setting up a CB, they work best when the antenna has a proper ground plane. Best place for an antenna is on the roof, trunk lid, or hood of a vehicle. (Flat surface, 90 degrees to antenna mast) Antenna mounts should be grounded to the chassis if not on a grounded surface. Do NOT run a ground from antenna mount directly to the battery. You are NOT grounding the 12v dc current of the vehicle or radio, you are grounding RF "radio waves". Running a ground directly to the battery will often result in ignition noise from the radio. My mount is in the bed, on the front bulkhead. Not the BEST place mind you, but plenty good enough since I have a ground strap run from the steel mount down to the chassis of the truck. The plastic inner bed of a Tacoma is a lousy mounting point. It NEEDS an adequate ground strap to eliminate noise and increase modulation. When running a dedicated ground, use flat "ground strap" rather that round stranded wire for best results. Also, ideally, you want 2/3rds or more of the antenna above the roof line of the vehicle. A typical "wound" antenna (ie, "Firestik") is "top loaded" with most of the 102" of winding in the upper portion of the mast. Personally, I shoot for 75% or more above roof line. Makes for better long distance reception.

Did you see the 3D printed thread here about bed brackets?

One was a corner mount option, but not really flat for mounting, say, a CB antenna.
The other IS flat, and seems you could mount an antenna on it, but still need to ground it.

Good idea....They should be steel rather than plastic for the best results.....then grounded to the chassis. Those bed rails are NOT adequately grounded. (BTDT, wasn't happy with the results.) I've made a couple aluminum mounts, which work "ok" but steel with a good chassis ground works BETTER.

Under MOST conditions, you won't notice a poorly grounded antenna. Where it shows up is in areas where there is marginal reception. For CB's used in close proximity (within a mile) you can get away with poor grounds.

RF waves send heat back into a radio if the Standing Wave Ratio is far off or the antenna ground is not good. This can destroy the "primaries" in the radio, slowly eroding the performance.

Haven't used it in my truck. In my Rzr I've used it (Mostly the PA for yelling at people to get out of the way) but I don't think the antenna is correctly placed/grounded because I get a little static. I also don't know much about CB's
