Low whistle/howl; wind or differential?

I haven't driven my truck much but I am noticing a sound in the 30-40 MPH range, which sounds like wind (more specifically like blowing on a jug kinda). I do not feel anything scary through the drive train but am paranoid because of the issues others have had. It is a constant pitch and doesn't seem affected by being under load or coasting. Even popped into neutral and the sound remained if that means anything. Is such a sound common with these?

sounds like the Lower control arm howl.

 

That may be the Lower A Arm Whistle, there is a TSB to put some Plugs in the Holes.

 

Tape the holes to find out for sure.

"Introduction
Some 2016 model year Tacoma vehicles may exhibit a howling or whistling noise from the front lower control arms at speeds of about 25 – 45 mph. The noise may be more noticeable when cross winds are present. Follow the procedure in this bulletin to address this condition".

This fixed my problem, no more noise at all. Lower control arm plugs, 3 in each side. But like Steele-Taco said you can tape over the holes first as a test. Or you could take it in at your next service and have Toyota do the TSB.

 

Completely normal (for a 3rd gen).... yer just getting started... wait for the tic tic tic in the dash on the passenger side... that's gonna drive ya crazy.

For the whistle.. that's what the radio is for and duct tape to the rescue.

It also could be the drivers side rear view mirror... mine whistles (when my radio is off) and around that speed as well. Again radio solves a lot of noise issues.

 

LCA is the blowing jug sound

 

At least the OPs Truck does not have a howling rear end.

Oddly enough for my truck, I never noticed the rear end howl until I let my parents take my truck for a spin and I sat in the back. It was quite noticeable and I did not even have the window down. Do you guys hear the rear end howl from the front, does the window need to be down? Or have you had passengers state they heard it from the back seats?

 

What is causing the "tic, tic, tic"? I've got it too on the passenger side dash. Also, does the whistling sound, sound like it's coming from the mirror?

I hear mine from the front it has become louder over time.

 

I had a brand new 17 for a few days and the rear end howl was quite noticeable from the drivers seat, l would hope that it would not get worse over time.

*Call your dealer and tell them you want to schedule a 20 to 30 minute ride along with the Service Advisor and a tech OR the Service Manager. Take them out on a road to where you can replicate the issue. Let them acknowledge the noise. Ask them to look into it. When you get home, regardless of outcome you should call Toyota Corporate 800-331-4331. Tell them you are concerned about the noise coming from the drivetrain, that this is not something you consider to be a normal characteristic of a brand new vehicle. Tell them that you're concerned about the longevity, reliability and overall value of the vehicle being affected. Get a case documented. This will help cover you down the road in case something gets worse, whether or not they actually do anything in the near term to fix it. Also it will bring attention to the issue as many others have so that hopefully Toyota will address it. This is a widespread complaint on this vehicle.

Recently bought a new 2017 OR 4x4 and just started hearing a whinning/whistle type noise - but could not produce a pattern it just seemed to vary. Yesterday I saw this thread and today I put 6 pieces of plain old duct tape on those six holes and all noise is gone. Drove it quite a bit and noise so far has not come back. I will soon get the plugs and fix it right. Thanks - this post fixed my noise issue.
