Hi everyone. First post ever on this site. I have a 2008 Tacoma Prerunner Double Cab. I want to put aftermarket rims and tires on the truck. I went by a couple of tire shops today and they both said to put 17x9 rims with a -12mm offset and 265/70/17 all terrain tires. Do you guys agree with this? I am fixing to put bilstein front leveling struts/shocks on the truck to level the front. I want an agressive look that is not going to rub. Any help would be great! Thanks...

All depends on a few things-
    1. Do you have any lift?
    2. What tire size do you want to run?
    3. Do you want a stock stance or have the tires pop out alittle (or alot)
    4. Budget?
    5. What base model if your truck (trd offroad, sport, ect.)

    1. I am going to put the bilstein front leveling stut on the truck soon about a 1 inch front lift. No lift in the back.
    2. I'm not sure. I just want a big enough size to fill in some of the fender gap without rubbing.
    3. I want the tires to pop out a little not too much.]
    4. My budget is around $1200.00 to $1400.00. I'm looking at rims and tires on tire rack.
    5. Its a prerunner base model 2wd.

There might still be some slight rubbing with that tire size. I have this http://www.fnwheels.com/new-products/konig-six-shooter/ with 265/70/17 A/T tires. I rub only at full turn against the little nub on the mud flap attaches to the wheel well. nothing bad and i can always just take a heat gun. oh and it rubbed when i was on OEM suspension. i barely rub now with my 884/5100/uca. I'm sure if i get the caster adjusted a little more the rubbing will go away but its just not enough to bother me.

The wheels will fit, they will stick out a bit though, I have the same wheel specs. I used 285/70-17 tires and there was rubbing, with your tire size it isn't likely but with how wide the wheel is pushed out you may need to trim a small bit.

The only thing I have to say is 9" wide with your tire size will yield a very straight side wall. Have you picked out a wheel yet?

No I have not picked the wheel out yet. Would it be better to go with 255/70/17s? What would I need to trim off? I'm thinking about taking the stock mud flaps off.

Your tire size is perfectly fine, just the wheel fitment is a little aggressive. I'd recommend you look for a 17"x8" or 17"x8.5" with a 0mm offset. That will push the wheel out enough for an aggressive look and sit about flush with the fender, but keeps it in enough that it doesn't rub with 265/70-17

So keep the my tire size the same 265/70/17, but change the width of the rim to 8.5?

The stock specs for your wheel are as follows. Take these specs and then change what is needed like back spacing for stance (go from 5.5" down to say 4.5").
    TRD Off-Road Wheels: 16x7, +32 mm offset, 5.25" backspacing,6x5.5"bolt pattern

Width and offset is where the change is. 8 - 8.5" wide and 0mm offset will put the wheel where you want it :)

No with that size tire you want a 8" wide wheel

8.5" will work, p rated is no problem, even an LT will mount an 8.5" width. 8" wide will give him a bit more sidewall bulge and can air down lower.

So what size would I have to go with if I want the 8.5'' wide wheel?

It comes down to the tire and it is something you need to look at in the tire specs. Some tires only allow up to a 8" wheel. Other will allow for a 8.5". What you need to do is either choose a wheel or a tire you like and stick to it. Then find (say you go with tire) a wheel that will fit that tire peoperly.

When picking a wheel and tire check the manufacturers website, look up the tire and size you're looking at and check "rim width range" if your wheel width falls into that range you're safe.

The reason why people go to a narrower width like 8" instead of 8.5" is so they can air down lower for offroading without as much of a risk rolling the tire off the bead.
